Mara Vell, the Listening Cup
A quick-fingered barmaid whose best tips are whispered, not silver
Mara Vell serves ale at the Lantern & Loam with a bright smile, a sharp memory, and the unnerving habit of knowing which patrons are lying. She is nearly wealthy enough to leave tavern work forever, but one final debt keeps her pouring drinks—and may eventually put the party in the path of the person who owns her promise.
Appearance
Mara is a compact woman in her early forties with copper-brown skin, gray-streaked black hair, and sleeves rolled neatly to the elbow. She wears a brass thimble on a cord around her neck and keeps a ledger hidden beneath the bar, its pages filled with names, dates, and carefully worded secrets. When nervous, she polishes the same glass until it squeaks.
Personality & voice
Mara is warm, practical, and impossible to rush; she answers questions with another question until she knows what the asker truly wants. Perform her with a low, conversational voice and the catchphrase, "A secret is just a tip that spends later." She never repeats a confidence for free, but she may trade a minor secret for a drink, a favor, or a promise written in her own ledger.
What they want
Mara wants to collect 2,000 more gold pieces before leaving the tavern and opening a discreet information office in a larger city. To reach that amount, she is quietly selling verified rumors to merchants, guilds, and adventurers while trying to avoid exposing anyone whose secret could get them killed. She may ask the party to deliver a sealed message, identify a blackmailer, or retrieve a ledger stolen from her room.
Secret
Mara's retirement fund is not entirely hers: most of it is money advanced by the party's future acquaintance, a powerful fixer named Ser Caldus Rusk. Years ago, Rusk paid Mara's medical debts and protected her younger brother in exchange for ten years of intelligence; she has fulfilled the term, but still owes him a final favor. Mara does not know that Rusk plans to call in that favor by ordering her to identify the party's most exploitable weakness, making her apparent friendliness both genuine and dangerous.
Plot hooks
- Mara offers the party a free round if they expose which regular is selling tavern gossip to a local crime gang.
- A courier delivers Mara a black envelope bearing Ser Caldus Rusk's seal, and she asks the party to guard her while she completes the favor inside.
- Mara's secret ledger vanishes, and recovering it becomes urgent when the thief begins auctioning secrets that could start a guild war.
