Mara Vell, the Kind-Kneed Thief

A sharp-eyed horse thief who rescues abused mounts—and carries one ruinous secret from a hero’s hometown

Mara Vell appears beside the road with three stolen horses, a split lip, and an expression that dares anyone to call her a criminal. She claims every animal was “borrowed from a worse fate,” and her knowledge of one party member’s hometown is precise enough to make old memories feel suddenly dangerous.

Appearance

Mara is a lean woman in her thirties with sunburned cheeks, cropped black hair, and a green scarf knotted around one wrist. She wears a patched riding coat reinforced with strips of saddle leather and carries a ring of confiscated bridle bits rather than a purse. Her left hand is permanently crooked from a foal’s kick, but she handles frightened horses with effortless gentleness; use scout statistics if she comes to blows.

Personality & voice

Mara is brisk, suspicious, and unexpectedly tender toward animals, speaking to horses in a soft nursery murmur while addressing people like troublesome livestock. She taps two fingers against her teeth before lying and repeatedly says, “Show me the bruise, then show me your law.” She refuses to call a stolen horse by its owner’s name until she decides that owner deserves it back.

What they want

Mara is moving six abused draft horses to a hidden valley refuge before the local magistrate’s men catch her. She needs the party to distract a mounted posse, obtain forged ownership papers, or confront the wealthy stablemaster whose animals she took. If the characters help, she offers a horse, a safe route through the borderlands, and one carefully chosen piece of information about their past.

Secret

Mara knows that the party member from a particular hometown was secretly declared dead years ago by the town council, whose members used the false death record to seize that character’s family property. The council’s decision was not bureaucratic cruelty alone: the character’s family had witnessed the council arranging the murder of a traveling judge, and Mara saw the original evidence while working as a courier. She has kept silent because the surviving councilors threatened the refuge horses, but she can name the murderer and produce a hidden copy of the death record.

Plot hooks

  • A sheriff arrests Mara for horse theft, while the supposedly rescued animals panic whenever their wealthy owner approaches.
  • A party member recognizes a hometown brand burned over on one of Mara’s horses, leading to proof that the stablemaster has been buying animals from an illegal fight circuit.
  • Mara offers the party her secret only if they escort the horses through the hometown where the council still believes one of the characters is dead.
