Merrit Bellweather
A soot-coated town crier who announces tomorrow’s disasters—and carries one ruinous truth from home
Merrit Bellweather rings a brass handbell at dawn and proclaims events that will occur the following day, whether anyone wants the warning or not. Their predictions are precise, public, and impossible to dismiss, but Merrit becomes evasive whenever the party asks how they know one devastating secret about a companion’s hometown.
Appearance
Merrit is a wiry, middle-aged human in a weather-faded red coat, with ink-stained fingers and a brass bell engraved with dates instead of prayers. Their left boot is always wet, even on dry roads, and tomorrow’s proclamation is written on a scrap of paper tucked beneath their tongue. They stand on a crate, cup one hand around their mouth, and scan the crowd as though searching for someone who has not arrived yet.
Personality & voice
Merrit is brisk, courteous, and utterly unwilling to debate whether a prediction is good news: “The truth needn’t be pleasant to be punctual.” Before every announcement, they ring the bell exactly three times, then state the event, location, and expected hour in a flat ceremonial cadence. When frightened, Merrit starts announcing tiny private futures—“You will drop that coin in six seconds”—to regain control.
What they want
Merrit wants the party to escort them to the next town before sunset, where they must publicly announce a massacre scheduled for the following day. They believe warning the townsfolk will save lives, but the killers will recognize Merrit’s voice and are already hunting them. Merrit offers the party their bell as collateral, though surrendering it makes the next day’s prophecy arrive as a painful whisper only Merrit can hear.
Secret
Merrit knows that the party member’s hometown was not destroyed by war, plague, or accident: its leaders secretly sacrificed the town’s poorest district to power a protective ward, and the party member’s family signed the order. Merrit witnessed the ritual as a child and has never revealed it because one surviving official now controls the only evidence. If exposed, Merrit can identify the official’s signet and name the buried street where the victims’ remains were sealed.
Plot hooks
- Merrit announces that one of the party will kill a friend tomorrow, then refuses to say which friend unless the party accepts the escort mission.
- The party reaches the warned town and discovers that every person Merrit predicted would die has already been marked with black thread beneath their clothing.
- A messenger from the companion’s hometown arrives with proof that Merrit is lying—unless the message itself is tomorrow’s event, and the messenger has not yet been born.
