Mara Venn, the Kind-Bitted Thief
A sharp-eyed horse thief who rescues abused animals—and carries one ruinous secret from a hero's hometown
Mara Venn appears beside the road with three stolen horses, each saddled for flight and each bearing the scars of neglect. She insists she steals no horse that is loved, only those whose owners have mistaken ownership for permission to be cruel. Mara is quick, practical, and dangerously well informed about one party member's hometown.
Appearance
Mara is a wiry woman in her thirties with sun-browned skin, cropped black hair, and a patched green riding coat lined with bits of old saddle blanket. She carries a blunt knife for cutting reins, a currycomb, and a brass tag stamped with the names of every horse she has taken. Her current mounts are visibly healthier than their former owners' animals: brushed coats, mended tack, and clean water always close at hand.
Personality & voice
Mara speaks in clipped, unimpressed sentences and addresses horses with more courtesy than people. She tests strangers by watching how they approach an animal, then says, "Show me your hands before you show me your sword." When lying, she polishes a brass horse tag with her thumb; when angry, she becomes very quiet and starts naming an animal's injuries one by one.
What they want
Mara is trying to move six rescued horses across the border before a wealthy magistrate's riders catch her. She needs the party to escort the animals through a dangerous mountain pass, then help expose the magistrate's pattern of buying exhausted horses cheaply, working them to death, and collecting insurance payments. In return, she offers excellent mounts, forged travel papers, and information about local roads.
Secret
Mara knows that the party member's hometown secretly burned its orphanage records to hide a child-trafficking arrangement run by the town's beloved former mayor. She learned the truth from the mayor's personal courier, whose dying horse she stole and nursed back to health; the surviving ledger is hidden inside the false bottom of Mara's tack trunk. The secret may implicate respected families, a current town leader, or even the party member's own relatives, and Mara will reveal it only if doing so saves a child or prevents the evidence from being destroyed.
Plot hooks
- The party is hired to recover a noble's prized mare, only to discover that the animal is starving, blind in one eye, and terrified of its owner; Mara has already taken it.
- A magistrate brands Mara a dangerous outlaw and offers a reward for her capture, while stablehands quietly beg the party to keep her horses from being returned.
- The party returns to a member's hometown and finds its elders preparing a public memorial for the former mayor; Mara arrives with the hidden ledger and asks the heroes to decide whether the truth is worth the town's collapse.
