🧙 NPC

Merrit Quill, the King’s Fool

A bright-eyed jester whose laughter is older than the kingdom and whose truth-telling has become a prison

Merrit capers into the throne room in bells, painted cheeks, and a smile held together by habit. They mock the king without fear because everyone else is forbidden to speak plainly—but beneath the performance is an ancient, exhausted soul desperate to stop pretending that age has not claimed them.

Appearance

Merrit appears to be a slender person in their late twenties, dressed in a crimson-and-gold motley patched with scraps from decades of royal fashions. Their bells are deliberately muffled, and silver-white hair shows beneath the cap despite repeated attempts to dye it black. When startled or deeply tired, their youthful face briefly slackens into the lined, weathered features of someone well over a century old.

Personality & voice

Merrit is quick, dry, and devastatingly precise, delivering insults as nursery rhymes or cheerful riddles. They habitually smile before saying something painful and tap one bell three times when deciding whether to tell the whole truth. Their catchphrase is, "Laugh now; it saves time later," though lately they say it without humor. In private, they speak slowly and plainly, as if every extra word costs them.

What they want

Merrit wants the king to publicly name a successor and grant them an honorable release from court service before their body finally gives out. To force the issue, they are collecting undeniable proof of the king’s worst mistake—a secret war, debt, or betrayal—and intend to reveal it during the next royal festival unless the king agrees to let them leave. The party may be asked to secure the evidence, protect Merrit during the performance, or find a way to expose the truth without starting a civil war.

Secret

Merrit is not merely old; they served as court fool to the king’s great-grandmother and have used a stolen longevity elixir to remain young-looking for generations. The elixir is failing, and every month now costs them years of apparent age. Worse, Merrit helped place the current royal line on the throne by telling one perfectly timed truth long ago, so the kingdom’s stability is partly their responsibility—and their silence has protected the crown as much as their jokes have challenged it.

Plot hooks

  • During a feast, Merrit interrupts a royal toast with a joke that accurately predicts an assassination attempt, then begs the characters to find who paid for it before the king demands an encore.
  • Merrit’s longevity elixir is stolen from their chambers, and the thief plans to sell it to the king’s ambitious heir; recovering it forces the party to decide whether Merrit deserves another century of hiding.
  • At the next festival, Merrit intends to reveal the ancient crime that founded the dynasty, but the king secretly hires the characters to stop the performance without killing the only person who can tell the truth.
