Mara Vell, the Last Correspondent

A soft-spoken gravedigger who sends condolences to monsters’ families—and carries one ruinous truth from a hero’s hometown

Mara Vell tends the cemetery beyond the village wall, where she buries whatever the adventurers leave behind: goblins, bandits, beasts, and things with names no one wants remembered. She writes each creature’s kin a gentle letter describing how it died, but her careful kindness falters whenever the party mentions one particular hometown.

Appearance

Mara is a narrow, weathered woman in her late fifties, with silver hair braided beneath a black headscarf and soil permanently worked beneath her fingernails. Her coat is patched with scraps of funeral cloth, each bearing a tiny stitched initial for someone she buried. She keeps a wax-sealed satchel of letters at her hip and pauses to straighten grave markers even while speaking.

Personality & voice

Mara is patient, unfailingly polite, and more comfortable discussing the dead than the living. She speaks in a low, practical murmur, calling everyone “dear heart,” and ends difficult statements with, “The dead deserve the whole truth.” When writing, she reads sentences aloud to test whether they sound merciful rather than false; when nervous, she folds and refolds a letter until its edges are razor-sharp.

What they want

Mara wants the party to give her names, descriptions, and any personal details about monsters they kill so she can send accurate condolences to their families. She is currently trying to locate the kin of a slain ogre who carried a child’s wooden horse, and she will trade cemetery records, local rumors, or discreet burial services for help finding them. She also wants the party to promise that, when possible, they will not leave the dead nameless.

Secret

Mara knows that a respected figure in one party member’s hometown—perhaps the mayor, temple keeper, or beloved retired hero—ordered a massacre years ago and blamed it on monsters. Mara was the courier who delivered the order, and she still possesses the original letter bearing the official seal. She has kept silent because the surviving victims’ families begged her to wait until they had enough evidence; revealing the document could shatter the character’s image of home, expose a current leader, and make Mara a target. If violence comes, Mara fights like a commoner and tries to protect the letter before herself.

Plot hooks

  • Mara receives a reply from the family of a monster the party killed, begging the adventurers to attend a funeral before an enraged relative begins hunting them.
  • The wooden horse found on a slain ogre matches a toy from a missing child, suggesting the monster was guarding captives rather than preying on them.
  • Mara privately shows one character the sealed order from their hometown and asks the party to escort her there before an influential official learns that the evidence still exists.
