"No striking from behind, no cruelty to the fallen, and no leaving before the final bell." โ Brasswind, Keeper of Saint Orla's Round
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Gallant Carouselier resembles a magnificent, oversized carousel horse carved from dark honey-colored wood and lacquered until it gleams like wet amber. Its mane is a cascade of faded crimson ribbons threaded with brass bells, while its eyes are polished black glass with pinpricks of blue carnival light behind them. Gold filigree curls across its flanks in the shape of galloping horses, and its four hooves end in iron fittings that spark against stone. Though it has no rider, a red velvet saddle remains permanently buckled to its back, and its wooden legs move with the unsettling grace of a living thoroughbred.
Behavior & Origins
Once the centerpiece of the Merry Saint Orla Fair, the carouselier named Brasswind gained awareness after years of hearing children promise that they would never abandon their favorite ride. When the fair was dismantled, Brasswind escaped into the countryside and began recruiting real horses, leading them beneath moonlight toward abandoned fairgrounds. It believes every conflict should have rules, agreed stakes, and a proper beginning and end. Brasswind wants to rebuild the carousel called Saint Orla's Round and fill every vacant pole with a horse that has chosen the ride freely. The ruined fairground at Bellweather Hollow is its current gathering place.
Running The Gallant Carouselier
Tactics
Brasswind begins by announcing its three rules and using Muster the Ride if horses are nearby. It keeps moving around the battlefield, using Galloping Overturn to knock down isolated targets while its recruited mounts carry it past heavier defenders. When bloodied, it focuses its attacks on anyone who violated the Compact and uses Trade Places to escape surrounded positions. It fights to the death if its carousel or recruited horses are threatened, but willingly allows a defeated opponent to leave if that creature honors the agreed terms.
DM Tips
- Telegraph Brasswind's arrival with distant carousel music, brass bells, and groups of horses walking in perfect circles around an empty fairground.
- Have the carouselier speak like an impeccably mannered ringmaster: cheerful, formal, and deeply offended by cheating rather than by ordinary opposition.
- Make the announced rules explicit before combat; players should understand that breaking them has immediate tactical consequences.
- For a weaker party, remove Legendary Resistance and reduce hit points to 150. For a stronger party, give Brasswind four legendary actions and allow Muster the Ride to summon two spectral warhorses when no real horses are present.
Loot
- Brasswind's Carousel Bell — A fist-sized brass bell that rings only when a promise is honestly made. Once per long rest, it can cast compelled duel without requiring concentration, but only if the user states the duel's rules aloud.
- The Red Velvet Saddle — A magically self-fitting saddle that grants a willing equine mount a walking speed of 60 feet and prevents it from being frightened while carrying a rider who honors the agreed terms of a contest.
- Saint Orla's Painted Slat — A lacquered strip from the original carousel, depicting a procession of horses heading toward Bellweather Hollow. It serves as a map and a clue to the location of Brasswind's unfinished round.
