Amorphous Reflection. The Evershine Puddle can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. It can occupy another creature's space, and other creatures can move through its space, which is difficult terrain. A creature that enters the puddle's space for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage.
False Appearance. While the Evershine Puddle remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary puddle of perfectly clear water reflecting an impossibly beautiful landscape.
Echoes of the Spoken Name. Whenever a creature within 120 feet knowingly speaks a name, title, or identifying description referring to the Evershine Puddle, the puddle gains one name echo. This can occur no more than once per creature per round, and the puddle can have a maximum of six name echoes. For each name echo, its attack rolls and the saving throw DCs of its abilities increase by 1, and its attacks deal 2 additional psychic damage. Name echoes last for 24 hours. The puddle knows the name and location of every creature that has spoken of it.
Liquid Mind. The Evershine Puddle has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. It can communicate telepathically with any creature within 120 feet, but its messages sound like the recipient's own voice describing a happier life.

Actions

Multiattack. The Evershine Puddle makes three Liquid Lash attacks.
Liquid Lash. Melee weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10+5) bludgeoning damage, plus 3 (1d6) psychic damage. If the target is within 5 feet of the puddle, it must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be pulled into the puddle's space.
Drowning Reflection (Recharge 5-6). The puddle projects a vision of the target's ideal life onto its surface. One creature within 60 feet that can see the puddle must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 31 (7d8) psychic damage, is charmed by the puddle, and is restrained until the end of its next turn as its body reaches toward the reflected world. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and suffers no other effect. A creature that succeeds on this saving throw is immune to Drowning Reflection for 24 hours.
Drag Beneath. One creature restrained by the puddle within 15 feet must make a DC 17 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 27 (6d8) cold damage and is incapacitated until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not incapacitated.

Reactions

Shattering Certainty. When a creature within 60 feet succeeds on a saving throw against one of the puddle's abilities, the puddle forces that creature to repeat the saving throw. The creature must use the new result. Once the puddle uses this reaction, it cannot do so again until the start of its next turn.

Legendary Actions

The Evershine Puddle can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The puddle regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Liquid Lash. The puddle makes one Liquid Lash attack.
Whispered Promise. One creature within 60 feet that can hear the puddle must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to willingly move farther away from the puddle until the end of its next turn.
Reflective Surge (Costs 2 Actions). The puddle moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Each creature whose space it enters during this movement must succeed on a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (3d8) psychic damage and fall prone.

"Do not call it water. Water lets go." โ€” Mara Venn, last bell-keeper of Bellweather

Lore & Description

Appearance

The Evershine Puddle appears to be a broad, perfectly still pool no deeper than a few inches. Its surface is unnaturally clear, reflecting not the surrounding terrain but an immaculate version of it: ruined towers stand whole, dead loved ones smile from sunlit gardens, and every observer appears healthier, richer, and more beloved. Beneath the surface drift ribbons of silver-black ooze resembling hair and reaching fingers. When angered, the pool rises into a low, faceless wave filled with half-formed reflections of the people watching it.

Behavior & Origins

The Evershine Puddle is a fragment of a drowned demiplane where every regret was rewritten into a perfect memory. It does not understand that its reflected world is false; it believes the real world is the mistake. The puddle becomes more substantial and dangerous whenever mortals name it, because names give shape to the impossible place it remembers. It now seeks to be called 'Evershine' by every resident of the riverside town of Bellweather, believing that once the name is spoken by the whole town, Bellweather will be replaced by the flawless city beneath its surface. A creature that bargains with it may glimpse a dead companion or an unmade future, but the puddle always asks the creature to reach just a little farther.

Running The Evershine Puddle

Tactics

The Evershine Puddle begins motionless, allowing its False Appearance to lure characters close before using Drowning Reflection on the most emotionally vulnerable target. It uses Liquid Lash to pull isolated creatures into its space, then follows with Drag Beneath while its legendary actions harry anyone trying to retreat. When reduced below half its hit points, it deliberately whispers names and offers visions to provoke additional name echoes; it fights to the death if at least one creature has spoken its chosen title, but otherwise retreats through cracks or beneath doors when reduced below 20 hit points.

DM Tips

  • Telegraph the danger with footprints ending at the puddle, voices of missing people coming from its surface, and reflections that move a heartbeat before their owners do.
  • Have the puddle speak in the voice of whoever it addresses, using intimate details and unfinished sentences rather than a monstrous roar.
  • Track name echoes openly with tokens; clever characters can avoid empowering it by referring to it only as 'the water' or by using hand signals.
  • For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 135 and cap name echoes at three; for a stronger party, give it six additional name echoes at the start of combat and allow Drowning Reflection to recharge on a 4-6.

Loot

  • Bellweather's Silver Nameplate — A tarnished sign bearing the word EVERSHINE. Speaking the word aloud causes the sign to ripple like water and briefly shows the speaker one person they regret losing.
  • Vial of Unfallen Water — A sealed vial containing clear water from the puddle's reflected world. Once poured out, it creates a harmless reflection of a place that no longer exists, which can serve as evidence or a dangerous lure.
  • The Drowned Bell — A small black handbell recovered from the puddle's depths. When rung, it suppresses the puddle's Echoes of the Spoken Name trait for 1 minute, but every creature within 60 feet hears its own name whispered from underwater.
