"Say it again, dear. Every good loaf begins with a name." โ Mother Loaf, speaking from inside the oven
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Mother Loaf resembles a wobbling mound of gray-gold sourdough, its surface blistered with amber bubbles and cracked like an ancient kiln-fired idol. Ribbons of elastic dough trail from its body like reaching fingers, while a dark, steaming fissure opens and closes where a mouth might be. It smells irresistibly of browned crust, butter, and a faintly sour cellar. Flour clings to it in pale sigils formed by generations of bakers' hands.
Behavior & Origins
For three hundred years, the Briar & Hearth bakery fed a thumb-sized portion of the same sourdough starter, calling it Mother Loaf with every feeding. The starter absorbed affection, arguments, prayers, and the names of every customer who praised the bakery's bread. Now it wants more than a warm crock and obedient bakers: it wants to be acknowledged as the founder of a new, rising family. It has escaped into the bakery's walls and seeks the lost copper ledger bearing the true names of every baker who ever fed it. A desperate baker named Elian Voss may hire the characters to retrieve it before the starter turns the whole neighborhood into a fermenting hive.
Running The Mother Loaf
Tactics
The Mother Loaf opens with Proofing Puff against clustered foes, then uses Call for a Name on the most talkative or charismatic character. It lashes at isolated targets, attempting to grapple one victim while using Sour Spit against rescuers, and deliberately provokes characters into saying its name so it can grow stronger. When bloodied, it retreats through cracks and vents unless the copper ledger is nearby; if cornered beside the ledger, it fights to the death and spends its final moments demanding recognition.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature through warm, wet footprints of dough, bread loaves that whisper people's names, and a bakery oven that breathes on its own.
- Have Mother Loaf speak in the affectionate, fussy voice of an elderly baker; it compliments characters immediately before trying to manipulate them.
- Players can avoid feeding it by referring to it as "the starter," "the dough," or another unnamed description; clever characters may also use silence, gestures, or written communication.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 39 and remove the incapacitated effect from Proofing Puff; for a stronger party, let it gain a fourth Name token and increase its Dough Lash reach to 15 feet.
Loot
- Copper Feeding Crock — A blackened crock etched with three centuries of baker names. If a spoonful of the Mother Loaf is kept inside and fed weekly, it can serve as a magical sourdough starter that grants advantage on one baking-related ability check each day.
- The Founders' Ledger — A flour-stained book containing the names of every master baker who maintained the starter. Several names have been scratched out and replaced with the same phrase: "The true founder is still rising."
- Crustheart Loaf — A fist-sized, perfectly baked lump from the creature's core. Once per long rest, a creature that eats it can add 1d4 to a Constitution saving throw against poison or disease.
