"It carried our food once. Now it carries our hunger." โ Toma Reed, last keeper of the Redmill Granary
Lore & Description
Appearance
This murderous wheelbarrow is built from gray, weather-cracked oak reinforced with rust-red iron straps. Its single wheel is swollen with rootlike knots, and its two handles twitch as if feeling for a farmer's grip. A deep basin forms its body, packed with black soil, split gourds, pale worms, and the gnawed remnants of whatever harvest it has stolen. When angered, the basin cracks open into a crooked mouth lined with splintered nails and sharpened carrot roots.
Behavior & Origins
The wheelbarrow once belonged to Mara Venn, a tenant farmer who used it to carry apples, turnips, and winter squash from her fields to the old Redmill Granary. When the granary's owner seized her farm and left her family to starve, Mara cursed the tool with her dying breath. It now believes every living creature is either a thief or a crop. The creature can be calmed briefly if someone speaks of honest farm labor, names Mara Venn, or returns a stolen harvest to the abandoned Redmill Granary. A useful clue lies beneath its soil: a brass maker's plate engraved with the words "H. Pell, Wheelwright."
Running Harvest-Hungry Wheelbarrow
Tactics
The wheelbarrow begins by rushing toward whoever carries food or a farm tool, using Rotten Harvest to scatter the group and make the ground difficult. It uses Hoard the Harvest to stay beside its chosen victim, combining the Iron Wheel with the long-reaching Splintered Handle while dumping its load whenever struck. When bloodied, it abandons lesser targets and tries to eat provisions or destroy a nearby food store; it fights to the death if the Redmill Granary is mentioned, but may retreat toward it if offered a genuine harvest.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the monster with wheel tracks that end abruptly, missing baskets of produce, and a field of crops chewed down to wooden stakes.
- Make The Forgotten Tool a discovery challenge rather than a gotcha: let characters notice its wheel, handles, basin, and old maker's plate before calling for the check.
- Give the monster a rasping wooden voice and have it repeat fragments of farm instructions such as "Lift," "Carry," and "Don't waste the good roots."
- For a weaker party, lower Rotten Harvest to 4d8 and reduce the recognition DC to 13; for a stronger party, give it a second reaction each round or increase the recognition DC to 17.
Loot
- Brass Maker's Plate — A tarnished plate stamped "H. Pell, Wheelwright." It identifies the wheelbarrow's maker and can be used to trace its history to the Redmill Granary.
- Mara Venn's Seed Pouch — A waxed pouch hidden beneath the rotting soil, containing seven black-gold seeds. Planted at the Redmill fields, they grow into unusually vigorous crops within a month.
- Iron Wheel Hub — A strangely warm section of the wheel that can be forged into a farming tool or weapon. Once per day, the bearer can reroll a failed check made to identify a plant, crop, or agricultural tool.
