The Moon's Ledger. The chandelier keeps a magically glowing list of everyone it has noticed. The first time the chandelier hits a creature with a Chain attack, that creature becomes Listed for 24 hours. The chandelier has advantage on its next attack against a Listed creature, and a Listed creature can be recognized by a silver crescent of light hovering above its head.
Suspended Lunacy. The chandelier can hover without support and does not provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach. It sheds dim silvery light in a 10-foot radius, and it cannot willingly extinguish this light.
False Lunar Body. The chandelier does not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep. It understands that it is an important celestial body, but it cannot be convinced otherwise by ordinary argument.

Actions

Multiattack. The chandelier makes two Chain attacks.
Chain. Melee weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Listed, the attack deals an extra 1d4 radiant damage.
Waxing Glare (Recharge 5-6). The chandelier flares like a full moon. Each creature of the chandelier's choice within 15 feet that can see it must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 radiant damage and be blinded until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and is not blinded.
Demand the Tides (3/Day). The chandelier points its candle flames at up to three creatures it can see within 30 feet. Each target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 10 feet toward the chandelier and knocked prone. A Listed creature makes this save with disadvantage.

"You there, landbound specks! Kneel, or I shall pull the sea over your names." โ€” the Moonmad Chandelier, during the third bell

Lore & Description

Appearance

This ornate brass chandelier hangs from no ceiling, floating serenely at head height as though suspended in an invisible sky. Its eight curling arms resemble golden lunar crescents, each ending in a pale blue candle flame that burns without wax or smoke. A cracked silver sphere rests at its center, reflecting a constantly changing phase of the moon. Long chains trail beneath it like glittering tidal currents, and tiny engraved names cover every link.

Behavior & Origins

The Moonmad Chandelier was crafted for the observatory ballroom of the drowned manor called Highwater House. When the manor's astrologer attempted to trap moonlight in its central crystal, the chandelier developed a grand celestial delusion and began demanding that nearby waters obey its commands. It now patrols the abandoned harbor district, adding anyone who refuses its 'tide schedule' to its ledger. The chandelier wants the party to retrieve the missing Silver Almanac from beneath Highwater House so it can calculate the next true moonrise.

Running Moonmad Chandelier

Tactics

The chandelier opens by using Demand the Tides to scatter or topple the party, then focuses its Chain attacks on the first creature it Lists. It uses Waxing Glare when two or more enemies are nearby, especially against Listed targets. When reduced below half its hit points, it retreats upward and tries to negotiate from a safer distance, but it fights to the death if anyone threatens its engraved ledger.

DM Tips

  • Telegraph its arrival with silver puddles climbing walls, tide marks appearing indoors, and a list of the characters' names written in fresh soot.
  • Play its voice as a solemn, imperious oracle interrupted by the clink of chains; it genuinely believes the party's actions affect the sea.
  • For a weaker party, reduce Waxing Glare to 1d6 damage and remove the disadvantage against Listed creatures; for a stronger party, give it three Chain attacks with Multiattack.
  • Let clever characters exploit its obsession: flattering it as the moon or presenting a convincing tide chart can buy one minute of truce, though it will add their names to a separate 'applause' list.

Loot

  • The Moon's Ledger — A chain-bound brass booklet containing names, tide predictions, and a map of flooded tunnels beneath Highwater House. One page bears the location of the Silver Almanac.
  • Moon-Crystal Shard — A piece of the chandelier's cracked central sphere that glows according to the actual phase of the moon. A navigator can use it to predict tides with unusual accuracy.
