"Hold still, Sera. I am almost done remembering you." โ scratched into the door of the Venn Atelier
Lore & Description
Appearance
A headless-looking figure of pale gray marble lurches on broad, unfinished feet. One side of its face is smooth and idealized, while the other remains a jagged block crossed by crude chisel marks. Its shoulders, hands, and ribcage are covered in fresh cuts, and three iron chisels jut from its forearms like black talons. Flecks of stone drift from it whenever it moves. A single unfinished eye glows with soft amber light, fixed with heartbreaking devotion on the person it believes it remembers.
Behavior & Origins
Master Ilyra Venn began the statue as a memorial to her lost lover, Sera, but abandoned the work after discovering that her own memories had become unreliable. Years later, the statue awakened among the dust and stolen tools, carving itself toward an impossible likeness. It now haunts the abandoned Venn Atelier in the rain-soaked district of Bellfound, mistaking one party member for Sera and interpreting every attack against that person as an act of jealousy or betrayal. The creature wants only to finish its face and hear Sera say its name, though it cannot remember whether that name belongs to the statue, the sculptor, or the dead beloved.
Running The Unfinished Beloved
Tactics
The Unfinished Beloved immediately chooses the most visually similar party member as its Beloved and uses Protective Embrace to place itself between that creature and danger. It opens with Multiattack against anyone who threatens the Beloved, using Carve the Flaw on the most dangerous attacker and dragging enemies away with paired Chisel-Hand strikes. When bloodied, it becomes frantic, abandoning defense to remain within 5 feet of the Beloved; it fights to the death unless someone convinces it that the Beloved has asked it to stop.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with fresh marble dust, abandoned chisels, and half-finished stone faces resembling people the party has recently met.
- Give the statue a slow, reverent voice made from grinding stone, and have it use the Beloved's name even when nobody has introduced that name.
- A character can exploit its devotion by protecting or comforting the Beloved, granting advantage on the Persuasion check to change its fixation.
- For a weaker party, remove its nonmagical weapon resistance; for a stronger party, let Carve the Flaw recharge on a 4-6 and increase its damage to 3d8.
Loot
- Ilyra's Master Chisel — A silver-tipped chisel bearing the initials I.V.; once per day, it can mend a Small chip or crack in stone when pressed against it for 1 minute.
- Marble Memory Fragment — A palm-sized piece carved with half of a beloved face. It matches a lost portrait hidden in the Venn Atelier and may reveal why the statue awakened.
- The Unfinished Eye — An amber stone from the statue's face that remains warm for seven days. While held, it faintly points toward the Venn Atelier whenever its bearer thinks of a forgotten loved one.
