"One jar for the rent, two for the interest, and one for the promise you broke." โ the last entry in Odran Vale's ledger
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Indebted Hive is a squat, animated beehive assembled from dark, weather-cracked wood and thick sheets of golden wax. Its entrance resembles a puckered mouth, and hundreds of amber eyes glimmer between the crawling bees that constantly spill from its seams. Faded blue ribbons, brass account tags, and scraps of the dead keeper's ledger are nailed to its sides. Honey leaks from the hive in slow, luminous ropes, hardening into chains wherever it touches the ground.
Behavior & Origins
When the beekeeper Odran Vale died, his hive inherited his promises through a final charm etched into its brood comb. The hive now believes every visitor is a creditor, debtor, bailiff, or witness, and it gathers honey to pay obligations that no living person remembers. It fiercely guards the old apiary's empty stone pedestal, convinced that Odran's most important possession is still resting there. In truth, the protected object was stolen years ago by a magistrate named Pell Orrow, whose descendants still possess the original debt ledger. The hive wants the ledger returned and will accept no payment except honey, signed confessions, or the restoration of the vanished object.
Running Indebted Hive
Tactics
The hive opens with Honeyed Writ against the most heavily armed or obviously wealthy-looking creature, then uses Multiattack against marked targets. It positions itself in doorways and narrow passages, using Payment in Kind to pin melee attackers while the Overdue Swarm blinds groups. When reduced below half its hit points, it retreats toward the empty pedestal or apiary entrance; it fights to the death only if someone touches the pedestal or threatens the ledger.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the hive with the smell of hot wax, the sound of bees reciting numbers, and fresh honey forming on objects that nobody touched.
- Give the hive a fussy, officious voice; it addresses adventurers as 'account holders' and pauses combat to demand receipts, signatures, or proof of inheritance.
- A clever character can temporarily distract it by presenting a written promise to investigate Odran Vale's missing possession, granting advantage on one Charisma check made to negotiate.
- For a weaker party, remove the Overdue Swarm recharge ability; for a stronger party, give the hive two additional swarms that act on its initiative with 5 hit points each.
Loot
- Odran Vale's Debt Ledger — A wax-sealed book listing dozens of debts, including one owed by a powerful local family. Returning it to the hive can reveal a larger adventure and calm the creature.
- Keeper's Amber Key — A thumb-sized key suspended in solid honey. It opens a hidden compartment beneath the apiary's empty pedestal.
- Jar of Remembrance Honey — A dark golden honey that allows anyone who tastes it to briefly hear the last sincere promise made by a deceased creature.
