"Interest compounds, trespassers. So does venom." โ Mister Ledger, wax tablet nailed to an abandoned apiary
Lore & Description
Appearance
This squat, animated beehive is built from gray-brown wood banded with strips of tarnished brass. Golden honey leaks from its hexagonal openings in slow, deliberate drips, while a swarm of unusually orderly bees circles it like clerks around a countinghouse. A tiny wax seal bearing its late keeper's initials hangs beneath the entrance, and a scroll of names is pinned to its side with a black stinger.
Behavior & Origins
When the beekeeper Orla Venn died, her hive inherited her debts along with her apiary. The bees learned to read the contracts she kept in the honey shed and now collect payment with tireless legalism. The Debtbound Beehive called "Mister Ledger" currently pursues the adventurers because they broke a fence, frightened a mule, or accepted directions from a ghost who owed Orla seven jars of honey. The hive wants its account settled and will pursue debtors through villages, dungeons, and royal courts rather than abandon a valid claim.
Running Debtbound Beehive
Tactics
The hive opens with Honeyed Notice against the most heavily armed debtor, then closes in to use Sting against creatures named in its ledger. It uses Read the Fine Print when surrounded or when trying to frighten someone into surrendering honey. If reduced to 3 hit points or fewer, it retreats toward its apiary while loudly reciting the party's debts; it fights to the death only if its ledger, honey stores, or keeper's remains are threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the encounter with brass debt notices nailed to trees, honey droplets forming letters, and bees arranging themselves into numerals.
- Roleplay the hive in a prim, nasal bureaucratic voice, with every sentence ending in a demand for payment or a citation from the ledger.
- Let creative repayment work: rare honey, repairing the keeper's apiary, recovering a lost contract, or convincing a debtor to pay can resolve the encounter without combat.
- For a weaker party, remove Read the Fine Print; for a stronger party, give the hive two allied swarms of bees and let it call them once when first bloodied.
Loot
- Keeper's Wax Ledger — A weatherproof list of debts, names, and peculiar collateral. It contains clues pointing to Orla Venn's abandoned apiary and several influential people who still owe payment.
- Jar of Contract Honey — A thumb-sized jar of luminous honey. A creature that eats it can understand bees for 1 hour, but must truthfully answer one question about a debt it currently owes.
