It had no face, yet every time it turned toward me, I knew it was smiling. โ Mara Venn, final entry in the Saint Orra watch ledger
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Pallid Crawler is a humanoid shape stretched into a nightmare of disproportion. Its torso is narrow and hairless, its arms and legs impossibly long and jointed like the limbs of a pale spider. It moves on all fours, its fingers and toes ending in dark, needlelike claws that tap softly against stone. Where a face should be is only smooth, corpse-white skin, occasionally splitting into a vertical seam when it feeds. Its body is mottled with blue veins and bruised gray patches, and its movements alternate between perfect stillness and sudden, insectile bursts.
Behavior & Origins
Pallid Crawlers are thought to be failed people reshaped by an intelligence that dwells behind mirrors and sealed doors. They stalk lonely roads, abandoned tenements, and Underdark tunnels, studying victims for days before entering their homes through chimneys, cracks, or ceilings. They do not speak, but their victims sometimes hear their own names whispered from empty rooms. The most notorious Crawler is called Aunt Vey, and it has made the abandoned bell tower of Saint Orra its nest; it wants the town's church bells silenced so it can hatch the pale eggs hidden inside the tower walls.
Running The Pallid Crawler
Tactics
The Pallid Crawler begins hidden above the party or behind cover, using Unnerving Silhouette and Needlelimb attacks to isolate a vulnerable target. It grapples a creature, drags it toward a wall or ceiling, and uses Mawless Bite while avoiding the strongest melee threats with Folded Crawl. When bloodied, it uses Hushing Lurch to disrupt spellcasters and flee across walls; it fights to the death only if defending Aunt Vey's nest or if no shadowed escape route remains.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with finger-shaped scratches on ceilings, muffled bells, and victims found with their faces covered in smooth white wax.
- Describe movement rather than facial emotion: a sudden head tilt, limbs folding backward, and fingertips testing every surface before it advances.
- For a weaker party, remove the psychic resistance and reduce Hushing Lurch to 2d8 damage; for a stronger party, give it a second reaction each round or add two crawling minions.
- The Crawler communicates through stolen echoes: repeat a character's last sentence from an impossible direction, but never let it speak original words.
Loot
- Saint Orra's Cracked Bell Clapper — A blackened iron clapper from the bell tower, engraved with a name that vanishes when spoken aloud. It can be used to locate the Crawler's nest by ringing near hidden aberrations.
- Pallid Finger-Bones — Three unnaturally flexible finger bones wrapped in copper wire. A creature holding one gains advantage on a single check to climb a wall, after which the bone crumbles.
- The Mirror-Skin Scrap — A translucent piece of membrane found in the Crawler's nest. It reflects a viewer's silhouette but not their face, and an occultist may use it as a component for magic involving disguises, portals, or scrying.
