"Do not resist the part I have written for you. Improvisation is only madness with better lighting." โ the final line of the Grand Teatro's lost script
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Marionette Regent resembles a tall, unnaturally thin humanoid draped in a coat of velvet-black skin. Its porcelain-white face is featureless except for a vertical grin filled with tiny brass teeth, while six glass eyes open and close across its brow whenever it senses fear. Dozens of translucent crimson strings emerge from its fingers, elbows, spine, and mouth, vanishing into the air above. Its limbs bend like carved wooden rods, and its movements alternate between elegant theatrical gestures and sudden, jerking spasms.
Behavior & Origins
The Marionette Regent was once the director of a celebrated theater in the city of Veyr, until it invited an alien intelligence into the orchestra pit and surrendered its audience to shared madness. It now believes every sentient creature is merely an unfinished puppet waiting for its proper role. The Regent secretly operates from the abandoned Grand Teatro Veyr, where kidnapped citizens are forced to perform the same play each midnight. It wants to assemble a perfect audience of a thousand minds and use their collective fear to give its unseen master a permanent body in the world.

Tactics
The Marionette Regent opens with Madness Curtain to scatter and incapacitate the party, then uses Mind Hook to drag isolated targets into reach of its String Lash attacks. It stays near ceilings, balconies, and cover, using Stage Shift and Rehearse the Scene to remain difficult to pin down. When reduced below half its hit points, it relies on Dissonant Command to turn wounded heroes against one another and flees through hidden passages if it loses access to at least two escape routes; it fights to the death only if the Grand Teatro or its assembled audience is threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the Regent through victims found standing motionless on rooftops, their shadows moving several seconds after they do, and distant applause from empty buildings.
- Give the Regent a soft, courteous stage-director voice; it addresses characters by invented roles such as Hero, Betrayer, and Understudy rather than by name.
- For a weaker party, reduce Madness Curtain to 6d8 psychic damage and remove the Regent's psychic resistance; for a stronger party, give it two additional uses of Rehearse the Scene each round.
- Use terrain with balconies, curtains, dangling ropes, mannequins, and narrow catwalks so the Regent's forced movement and teleportation feel like active stage direction.
Loot
- The Regent's Brass Baton — A blackened conductor's baton capped with a glass eye. It points toward the Grand Teatro Veyr whenever its former audience is in danger.
- Audience Ledger — A leather book listing hundreds of names, each marked with a role and a predicted manner of death. Several entries belong to people the characters know.
- Spool of Crimson Thought-Thread — A coil of nearly invisible psychic filament. Woven into a mask or puppet, it can replay one memory taken from the Regent's victims, though each use risks revealing the user's own thoughts to something listening beyond the world.
