"It told me my brother would come home at dawn. He did. He had been dead for nine years." โ Mara Venn, ferrymaster
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Misremembered Choir is a rattling cluster of six to twelve taxidermied songbirds, their bodies bound together with black thread, copper wire, and strips of yellowed funeral cloth. Their feathers retain faded traces of blue, red, and gold, but their glass eyes are mismatched: one looks wet, one reflects scenes that are not present, and one is always turned toward the nearest exit. Their stitched beaks open and close in perfect musical harmony, releasing voices layered from children, widows, soldiers, and the listener's own future self.
Behavior & Origins
The Choir was assembled by an undertaker named Vell Sarrow, who tried to preserve the final songs of birds found dead beneath an astrologer's tower. Since then, it has begun predicting events that have not happened, though every prediction contains a subtle error: a dead person is named alive, a door is placed on the wrong wall, or a beloved voice uses a word it never would. The birds know they are changing and desperately seek the Glass Almanac kept in the abandoned bell tower of Saint Orra. They believe the Almanac contains the last correct version of their song, though something else has already begun singing between their notes.
Running The Misremembered Choir
Tactics
The Choir opens with Foretelling Cadence, trying to spoil the reactions and attacks of the most dangerous-looking opponent before retreating into a cluttered room or forest canopy. It uses its flight and ability to occupy a creature's space to remain difficult to pin down, attacking only when cornered. When reduced to half its hit points, its song becomes frantic; it uses Unstitched Refrain and flees toward the nearest bell, music box, or other resonant object rather than fighting to the death.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the Choir with several simultaneous bird calls, followed by a prediction that is almostโbut not quiteโtrue; nearby victims may have acted on prior wrong prophecies.
- Give each bird a slightly different voice, but have all of them finish one another's sentences in the same unsettling rhythm.
- For a weaker party, remove the Choir's resistance to nonmagical weapon damage. For a stronger party, let Unstitched Refrain recharge on a 5-6 instead of limiting it to once per day.
- The Choir should be more interesting as an eerie informant or reluctant witness than as a straightforward combat encounter; it answers questions with useful facts buried inside one deliberate mistake.
Loot
- The Copper Throat — A tiny copper voice box sewn into the largest bird. When held to the ear, it repeats one sentence spoken nearby the previous day, but changes one proper name.
- Black Funeral Thread — A spool of thread taken from the Choir's bindings. It twitches toward places where someone is about to die, though it is wrong by one day.
- Feather of the Unhappened Dawn — A blue-and-gold feather whose reflection shows the bearer wearing clothing they have not yet acquired. The Choir wants it back if separated from the remains.
