Do not say farewell beneath the rain. The stones are listening. โ warning scratched into the door of Bellweather Tor
Lore & Description
Appearance
A Petrichor Grievant is a hunched humanoid shape formed from black, heat-cracked stone veined with glistening gray mud. Thin streams of water seep constantly from its joints and gather in shallow pools around its feet. Its face is a smooth slab broken only by two glowing amber fissures, while its long fingers end in rounded wedges of stone. Wherever it stands, the air carries the unmistakable scent of rain on sun-baked rock.
Behavior & Origins
Petrichor Grievants are born from places where a violent storm ended a long drought and someone important failed to return home. They remember the absence more strongly than the person, and they interpret every departure as a fresh betrayal. The most notorious grievant, called Mourner-of-Last-Light, haunts the abandoned waystation of Bellweather Tor, where corridors turn back on themselves and doors open into rooms that were not there moments before. It wants travelers to remain forever, believing that enough company can make its first goodbye stop being true.
Running Petrichor Grievant
Tactics
The grievant opens with Petrichor Burst if it can catch two or more creatures, then uses Rain-Slick Grasp to pull isolated targets into the reach of its Stone Fists. It uses Not Yet to remain beside anyone attempting to flee or reach an ally, and in its lair it relies on The Path Bends Back to divide the party. When badly wounded, it fights recklessly to keep one creature close, but flees into cracks or storm drains if no one has spoken to it or acknowledged its grievance.
DM Tips
- Telegraph danger with the smell of rain in a completely dry passage, fresh puddles forming uphill, and footsteps that echo from rooms the party has already left.
- Roleplay the grievant as wounded rather than openly furious: it repeats the last words spoken by departing creatures and pauses expectantly whenever someone says 'goodbye.'
- For a weaker party, remove the thunder damage from Stone Fist and reduce Petrichor Burst to 2d6; for a stronger party, let The Path Bends Back affect two creatures on a failed save.
- Make the lair physically rearrange between scenes, but preserve meaningful landmarks so the maze feels emotionally spiteful rather than random.
Loot
- Rain-Black Heartstone — A warm, fist-sized stone found where the grievant dissolves. It smells of rain and can keep a small campfire burning through one night of heavy weather.
- Bellweather Waystone — A flat stone marked with a half-erased road sign. Once per day, placing it on the ground points toward the last place its bearer genuinely said farewell.
