"Name what you want, traveler. I will give you the truth of it, and you will give me the truth of you." โ Veyra-of-the-Final-Crossing
Lore & Description
Appearance
A Wishbound Bridge Ghost appears as a translucent stretch of ruined masonry suspended in the shape of a hunched traveler. Its body is built from broken gray stones, splintered beams, rusted nails, and scraps of old rope, all drifting around a pale human face. Hundreds of tiny luminous words crawl across its surfaces: wishes carved into the bridge by lovers, pilgrims, fugitives, and children. Its eyes glow like lanterns seen through fog, and when it moves, the sound of distant footsteps crosses empty air.
Behavior & Origins
When the old Morrowspan was demolished, its builders found that travelers had carved wishes into every stone. The bridge's accumulated hopes refused to disappear and gathered into a ghost called Veyra-of-the-Final-Crossing. Veyra does not understand why the bridge was destroyed, but it remembers every promise made upon it and demands that new travelers make promises of their own. The ghost now haunts the rubble at Blackwater Ford, seeking someone willing to rebuild the bridge with stones bearing the original wishes. A powerful local magistrate wants Veyra destroyed because the ghost knows the honest price behind the magistrate's rise to power.
Running Wishbound Bridge Ghost
Tactics
The ghost begins with Last Honest Offer and tries to separate the most desperate-looking traveler from the group through a tempting but fair bargain. If refused or attacked, it uses Wish-Tether to drag creatures toward broken bridge stones and attacks with Spectral Toll while passing through walls and the ground. It retreats into the rubble when reduced to 2 hit points, unless someone has broken a promise made at the crossing, in which case it fights until destroyed.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with glowing wishes appearing on loose stones, ghostly footsteps crossing the gap, and the voices of travelers asking what the characters desire.
- Play Veyra as mournful and literal rather than malicious; use different borrowed voices for each sentence and pause expectantly after every bargain.
- Keep bargains modest and concrete, such as safe passage, a clue, advantage on one check, or the return of a stolen keepsake, with an equally specific price.
- For a weaker party, have Veyra offer bargains before combat and avoid using Wish-Tether; for a stronger party, give it three floating bridge stones that provide half cover and can be destroyed with 5 hit points each.
Loot
- Stone of the Unspoken Wish — A warm fragment of the demolished bridge covered in one fading wish. Once, the holder can gain advantage on a Charisma check made while honestly stating a personal desire.
- Veyra's Brass Toll Token — A corroded token stamped with a bridge that no longer exists. It bears the name of a traveler who vanished decades ago and may identify the ghost's unfinished promise.
