"You may pass when the far shore remembers your name." โ words heard from beneath the ruined bridge
Lore & Description
Appearance
A Wishbridge Remnant appears as a tall, translucent figure built from the memory of a demolished bridge. Its ribcage resembles warped iron arches, its limbs are lengths of moss-coated timber, and pale blue lantern-light burns where its face should be. Torn scraps of paper, prayer ribbons, coins, lockets, and children's drawings orbit its body like drifting leaves. When it moves, footsteps echo from somewhere far below, followed by the groan of a bridge under impossible strain.
Behavior & Origins
The bridge called Saint Orra's Span once carried pilgrims, merchants, fugitives, and newlyweds over a deep ravine. Travelers tied written wishes to its rails and tossed coins into the river below. When the bridge was condemned and demolished, dozens of wishes remained nailed to its beams. Their accumulated longing formed the Wishbridge Remnant, which still guards the place where the bridge once stood. It believes the bridge is merely hidden and attacks anyone who tries to cross the ravine, remove the wish-tokens, or build a replacement. A concrete hook for the DM: the remnant is searching for the last wish, written by a missing child named Elian Voss, which promised that his family would return home safely; the wish is now sealed inside the foundation stone of the nearby tollhouse.
Running Wishbridge Remnant
Tactics
The remnant opens with Echo of the Fall, aiming to knock down as many intruders as possible and divide the party with phantom terrain. It uses Shift the Missing Span to appear behind isolated targets, then pulls them toward the ravine with Splintered Span and Demand the Crossing. When reduced below half its hit points, it focuses on anyone carrying wish-tokens or speaking about replacing the bridge; it flees only if the last wish is respectfully returned, but otherwise fights until destroyed.
DM Tips
- Telegraph danger with ghostly footsteps crossing empty air, paper wishes fluttering against the wind, and the sound of a bridge creaking where no bridge remains.
- Roleplay the remnant as formal and mournful rather than openly hateful; it speaks in the voices of travelers whose wishes were never fulfilled.
- Let players discover that reading a wish aloud can briefly distract or pacify the remnant, while mocking a wish immediately draws its attacks.
- For a weaker party, reduce Echo of the Fall to 3d10 damage and remove the remnant's resistance to nonmagical weapon damage; for a stronger party, give it 20 temporary hit points whenever a creature fails Demand the Crossing.
Loot
- The Last Wish — A water-stained paper sealed in a cracked brass tube, bearing Elian Voss's unfinished wish. Returning it to the old tollhouse can calm the remnant and reveal the fate of the Voss family.
- Span-Iron Rivet — A cold iron rivet that always points toward the nearest safe crossing. Once per long rest, its bearer can cast misty step, but only to a space within 30 feet of solid ground.
- Lantern of Unfinished Roads — A ghostly blue lantern that sheds dim light for 20 feet. While lit, it reveals invisible bridges, doors, paths, and other routes created by magic or lingering spirits.
