Lair
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the creature can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; it can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Turn the Map. At initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Misplotted Place chooses up to three doors, corridors, staircases, or similar passages within its lair. Each passage opens onto a different connected location of the Misplotted Place's choice, and the change lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round.
- Misplaced Landmark. A familiar landmark, such as a statue, well, tree, or signpost, appears in an unoccupied space within 60 feet. Each creature within 10 feet of it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn.
- Road That Wasn't There. A 30-foot-long, 5-foot-wide path appears across the floor in the lair. Until the next round, the path is difficult terrain for the Misplotted Place's enemies, and any creature that enters it for the first time on a turn must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or be teleported to another point in the lair chosen by the Misplotted Place.

"You marked us with a careless hand. Do not complain when the ink marks you back." โ The sign above Bellweather's only gate
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Misplotted Place resembles a squat, hunched district torn from a map and forced into three dimensions. Its body is built from crooked plaster walls, mossy paving stones, splintered signposts, and sections of road that bend like limbs. Windows open onto impossible interiors, chimneys breathe cold blue smoke, and a red surveyor's line pulses beneath its cracked surface like a vein. Its head is a weather-beaten compass rose set in a gabled facade, with four lantern-bright windows serving as eyes and a narrow doorway stretching into a furious, tooth-lined mouth.
Behavior & Origins
Years ago, the royal cartographer Ilyra Venn accidentally drew a village called Bellweather in an empty valley, then copied the error onto twelve official maps. Travelers began finding the place where none had existed before. Bellweather developed streets, residents, weather, and finally a jealous awareness of the outside world. When surveyors attempted to correct the maps, the village folded itself around them and became the Misplotted Place. It now resents every visitor because visitors always leave. The creature wants Ilyra Venn's lost original map, believing that destroying it will make Bellweather permanent and force the world to acknowledge it.
Running The Misplotted Place
Tactics
The Misplotted Place opens with Fold the Street to appear behind the party, then uses Erase the Shortcut to scatter intruders through its shifting corridors. It keeps enemies separated with Boundary Stroke and uses the lair to place walls, doors, and false landmarks between itself and ranged attackers. When bloodied, it retreats toward the room containing Ilyra Venn's original map and fights to the death rather than allow anyone to leave with it.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with roads that return to the same crossroads, maps whose ink crawls overnight, and distant bells that grow louder when the party tries to leave.
- Roleplay the creature as a resentful, lonely town speaking through signs, shutters, and overlapping whispers; it is offended by phrases such as 'just passing through.'
- For a weaker party, remove Inkfall's psychic rider and reduce Erase the Shortcut to 4d8 force damage; for a stronger party, let Fold the Street teleport 60 feet and give the creature three Boundary Stroke attacks with Multiattack.
- Make the lair's rearrangement visible and consistent enough for clever players to exploit, such as using chalk, string, or damaged landmarks to track changes.
Loot
- Ilyra Venn's Original Map — A brittle vellum map showing Bellweather as a blank valley, except for a single red line that moves whenever someone says the village's name. It can guide its bearer to the Misplotted Place or erase one minor location from a map.
- Compass of the Unfinished Road — A brass compass whose needle points toward the nearest place that should not exist. Once per day, it can reveal a hidden passage or extradimensional doorway within 60 feet.
- Bellweather Signboard — A splintered wooden sign bearing the words 'WELCOME, STAY FOREVER.' It whispers directions in the voice of someone the listener misses and may serve as proof that Bellweather is real.
