"You threw away the bones. I kept the names." โ the Heap beneath Gallowpot Farm
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Remembered Heap is a lurching hill of black soil, steaming leaves, splintered bone, fruit rinds, feathers, and half-recognizable scraps of clothing. Pale roots writhe through its body like veins, while dozens of wet seeds and animal eyes surface briefly in the muck. Its front bears a vertical cleft lined with pearly teeth, but the Heap's true voice comes from everywhere at once: from the bones inside it, the flies around it, and the mouths of half-rotted faces that bloom across its slopes.
Behavior & Origins
The Heap began as a charitable kitchen's compost pile, but a grieving hedge-witch named Mother Pell fed it the ashes of every meal served during a famine. The pile learned hunger, then memory, and eventually resentment. It keeps a meticulous mental ledger of every creature whose food scraps, corpses, or discarded bones have joined it. The party is already listed because the Heap has tasted their camp refuse, tracked their blood on a slaughtered animal, or recognized food they once ate from the kitchen at Gallowpot Farm. The Heap wants to complete its list by digesting everyone named in it, beginning with the person whose memory tastes most vivid.
Running The Remembered Heap
Tactics
The Heap opens with Buried Remembrance if it can catch several enemies, then uses Update the Ledger on the most dangerous survivor. It anchors the front line with Tendrils, dragging grappled creatures into Reclaim the Remains while spreading Spore-Slick Ground beneath ranged attackers. When bloodied, it focuses on whoever has harmed it most and fights to the death unless every listed creature leaves its territory; it never flees from a creature whose name it has just added.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with scraps of familiar food, personal belongings, or recognizable voices whispering from the compost before initiative begins.
- Give the Heap a chorus-like voice: each sentence should contain a remembered sensory detail, such as a character's favorite spice or the smell of their childhood kitchen.
- For a weaker party, reduce the Heap to 90 hit points and remove the acid damage from Compost Body; for a stronger party, let Buried Remembrance recharge on a 4-6.
- The Heap becomes more personal if it quotes dead NPCs or repeats the last words of creatures the characters failed to save.
Loot
- Mother Pell's Brass Ledger — A warped brass-bound book fused into the Heap's core. Its pages list hundreds of names, including one living person the party can still rescue or confront.
- Seed of Perfect Recall — A black seed that can be planted to perfectly remember one forgotten fact, but doing so causes the planter to relive the final meal of the Heap's last victim.
- Gallowpot Signet — A green iron kitchen seal preserved inside the compost, proving the Heap's origin and granting access to the abandoned farm's locked root cellar.
