"Do not leave before the ending. The ending is the only part he remembers." โ scratched into a theater seat
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Last Applause is a grotesque troupe of five lacquered wooden marionettes, each dressed as a different character from a forgotten play: a crowned monarch, a ragged fool, a masked lover, a soldier with a splintered sword, and a child in a crimson coat. Their painted faces are cracked, their glass eyes swivel independently, and dozens of translucent strings trail upward into empty air. When they move, their joints knock like applause. Their mouths open and close in perfect unison, though the voice that issues from them sounds like a dead puppeteer whispering from behind the audience.
Behavior & Origins
The troupe belonged to Master Odran Vale, who died of a sudden seizure during the final performance of The King Who Would Not Bow. His hands never released the control bar, and the marionettes continued the play until the theater burned around them. Now they seek audiences wherever people gather, dragging unwilling spectators into their unfinished performance. The Last Applause is currently searching for the vanished final page of Odran's script, which was stolen by a traveling magistrate named Elian Voss and hidden beneath the old Bellweather Theater.
Running The Last Applause
Tactics
The troupe opens with Take Your Places against the most dangerous-looking combatant, then uses Dance Across the Set to surround isolated targets and unleash Unwelcome Encore. It focuses String-Cut attacks on one creature to restrain it while the other puppets harry its allies, using Cut the Wrong String to punish nearby attackers. When bloodied, it retreats across walls and ceilings while forcing the party into awkward positions; it never fights to the death unless the original script is present, in which case it becomes frantic and attacks until destroyed.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with an empty theater whose curtains rise by themselves, wooden footsteps overhead, and a dead audience applauding in perfect rhythm.
- Give the troupe distinct voices and gestures: the king commands, the fool giggles, the soldier salutes, the lover beckons, and the child silently points toward the nearest exit.
- If the party is struggling, reduce the troupe's String-Cut damage to 1d6+4 slashing and remove the psychic damage; for a stronger party, let Unwelcome Encore recharge on a 4-6.
- When the troupe relocates, leave behind one puppet's painted hand clutching a fresh playbill that names the next place it will perform.
Loot
- The King Who Would Not Bow — A water-stained script missing its final page. It identifies the troupe's original theater and provides the means to destroy it permanently.
- Odran Vale's Control Bar — A black wooden crossbar carved with tiny audience faces. While holding it, a creature can make the marionettes pause for 1 minute once, but doing so causes the holder to hear Odran begging from inside the wood.
- Crimson Glass Eye — The eye of the child puppet, warm despite being made of glass. It points toward the troupe's next performance when placed on a map.
