"Please keep your voice down. It has learned the sound of your name." โ Mara Vell, last librarian of Bellweather
Lore & Description
Appearance
A stacksbound hush resembles a tall, jointed silhouette draped in strips of shadow-dark parchment. Its limbs bend like the arms of a broken reading lamp, ending in translucent talons sharp as freshly cut paper. A faceless oval of gray vellum occupies its head, where faint lines of ink rearrange themselves whenever someone speaks. Its rib cage is a crooked miniature bookshelf, and behind it hang dozens of tiny trophies: buttons, teeth, spectacles, quills, ribbons, and other odd keeps taken from those it has defeated.
Behavior & Origins
A stacksbound hush is the silence left behind when the last librarian locks the doors and every book has been returned to its place. Given enough years in an old archive, that silence can become territorial, curious, and hungry for proof that intruders were once present. It does not eat its victims; it collects one peculiar token from each, carefully arranging the objects in its nest according to rules no living scholar has deciphered. The creature known as Index-Nine haunts the sealed Bellweather Municipal Library, where it wants only one thing: the brass tongue of the library's missing announcement bell, stolen decades ago by a former head librarian. Returning the bell's tongue may calm it, though disturbing its trophy collection will provoke an immediate attack.
Running Stacksbound Hush
Tactics
The stacksbound hush begins from concealment among shelves, using Whisper-Snare on the loudest or most magically dangerous target before closing in with its talons. It uses Between the Shelves to strike from cover, reposition, and force enemies to waste movement pursuing it through cramped aisles. When bloodied, it unleashes Shushing Burst and focuses on whoever has disturbed its trophy nest; it flees only if driven outside its territory, otherwise fighting to preserve its collection.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with books opening by themselves, muffled footsteps overhead, and shelves containing tiny objects that clearly belonged to missing visitors.
- Roleplay it through environmental reactions rather than speech: lamps dim when it is angry, pages turn toward intruders, and written words briefly rearrange into warnings.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to thirty-six and make Shushing Burst recharge only once per encounter; for a stronger party, give it a second use of Between the Shelves each round while inside a library.
- Let players identify the creature's territorial instinct and bargain by returning a stolen trophy or helping recover the bell tongue.
Loot
- The Trophy Ledger — A leather catalogue listing every victim's name, date, and collected token. Several entries describe people who disappeared years ago, offering clues to unresolved mysteries.
- Bellweather Bell Tongue — A small brass clapper hidden among the creature's oldest trophies. Returning it to the library bell can end the haunting or reveal a secret passage beneath the archive.
- Ink-Stained Spectacles — A pair of cracked spectacles taken from the library's former head librarian. When worn, they reveal faint writing on books and walls that has been erased or magically concealed.
