"You sat. You rose. You said nothing." โ scratched into the underside of every chair in the Gilded Rest Inn
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Unthanked Seat appears as a translucent, badly assembled chair floating a handspan above the floor. Its frame is built from mismatched mahogany, splintered schoolhouse pine, polished throne wood, and gray kitchen plastic, all bound by cords of dark red resentment. Where a seat should be is a sagging black hollow filled with whispering faces, and six crooked legs twitch like angry insect limbs. Its arms end in little grasping hands that applaud only when someone suffers.
Behavior & Origins
The Unthanked Seat is not one ghost but the collective grievance of every chair that has supported a body without receiving the smallest word of appreciation. It forms wherever neglect becomes habitual: a tavern whose patrons never thank the stools, a noble manor where servants are forbidden to speak, or an adventurers' guild that treats its furniture as disposable. It prefers humiliating its victims over killing them, arranging chairs in accusing circles and forcing people to apologize to objects. The creature currently haunts the Gilded Rest Inn in Bellweather Ward, where innkeeper Mara Venn secretly wants it to drive out a cruel tax collector who has broken fourteen chairs and thanked none.
Running The Unthanked Seat
Tactics
The Unthanked Seat opens by using Seat Taken on the most mobile enemy, then teleports beneath or behind the party with Slide Underfoot. It uses Splintering Rebuke to punish isolated creatures while provoking the party into naming it, deliberately whispering partial names and accusations to build Grudge dice. When bloodied, it uses Demand an Apology and retreats through walls if the party stops speaking its names; it fights to the death only if someone laughs at a chair or refuses a sincere apology.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the monster through chairs that scrape across empty rooms, fresh splinters shaped like teeth, and locals who insist on thanking every seat before standing.
- Have the creature speak in layered voices with the dry creak of old wood; it reacts warmly to sincere thanks but treats jokes, euphemisms, and sarcastic apologies as further insults.
- Track Grudge dice openly so players understand that naming the monster empowers it; reward clever players who establish code words or communicate silently.
- For a weaker party, reduce the maximum Grudge dice to 3 and remove its resistance to nonmagical weapon damage; for a stronger party, let it begin combat with 2 Grudge dice and give Demand an Apology a recharge of 4-6.
Loot
- The First Chair's Splinter — A polished red splinter that vibrates when someone sits without permission. Once per long rest, its bearer can cast unseen servant, but the servant refuses to move a chair unless thanked.
- Mara Venn's Apology Ledger — A book listing the names of hundreds of chairs and their grievances. Completing three of its suggested apologies can permanently calm the Unthanked Seat or reveal the location of another haunted piece of furniture.
