Lore & Description
Appearance
The wishbridge ghost appears as a long, broken span of masonry suspended in the air, its cobbles floating in uneven rows above a dark ribbon of spectral water. Pale iron railings curl like ribs along its sides, and hundreds of dimly glowing names are scratched into the stones. At its center stands a translucent archway filled with rain, moonlight, and brief glimpses of travelers who crossed it long ago. The ghost's outline constantly collapses at one end before rebuilding itself at the other.
Behavior & Origins
The ghost was once Mercy Bridge, a humble stone crossing where travelers tied ribbons and whispered wishes before beginning the dangerous road north. When the river changed course, Mayor Odran Vey ordered the bridge demolished rather than repair it, leaving hundreds of wishes carved beneath its central arch. The bridge's spirit now drifts above the old riverbed, forcing strangers to relive unfinished crossings and attacking anyone who treats it as merely a haunting. The ghost wants one final traveler to speak Mercy Bridge's name and carry its last unfulfilled wish to the ruined shrine of Saint Orla. That wish was made by a child named Tessa: for her father to come home.
Running Wishbridge Ghost
Tactics
The ghost begins by using Whispered Wish on the most emotionally vulnerable-looking creature, then attacks whoever seems closest to discovering its history. It uses Bridge's Last Toll to split the party and knock creatures toward water or other hazards, while drifting through walls and broken masonry to stay difficult to pin down. Once the characters understand Mercy Bridge, it becomes less hostile and fights only those who mock its wishes or threaten the old shrine; otherwise, it fades peacefully when its final wish is acknowledged.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the ghost's weakness with a surviving milestone that reads MERCY BRIDGE, old travelers' ribbons, and spectral figures whispering their destinations before combat begins.
- Use a soft, layered voice for the ghost, with its words occasionally interrupted by the sounds of wagon wheels, rushing water, and distant farewells.
- If the party struggles with the history check, let them learn the truth through roleplaying, examining carved stones, questioning an elderly local, or speaking a sincere wish aloud.
- For a weaker party, reduce Bridge's Last Toll damage to 3 (1d6); for a stronger party, increase its hit points to 39 and let Whispered Wish affect two creatures.
Loot
- The Last Ribbon — A faded blue ribbon tied around a spectral iron nail. When carried to Mercy Bridge's old shrine, it reveals the location of Tessa's father's grave or the truth of his disappearance.
- Stone of Mercy Bridge — A warm fragment of white bridge stone engraved with a dozen unfinished wishes. It can be placed in a new crossing to bless travelers with advantage on one saving throw against fear.
- Traveler's Token — A tarnished copper coin bearing the bridge's original crest. Locals recognize it as proof that the bearer has earned the protection of Mercy Bridge.
