Legendary Actions
The Closing Silence can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Lair
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the creature can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; it can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Shelves Rearrange. Up to three 10-foot cubes of bookshelves slide up to 20 feet along the floor. Creatures occupying those spaces must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 3d8 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The shelves provide total cover afterward.
- The Librarian's Bell. A bell rings without producing sound. Each creature of the Closing Silence's choice in the lair must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions and unable to speak above a whisper until initiative count 20 on the next round.
- Errata. The Closing Silence alters one visible written word within the lair. Until initiative count 20 on the next round, the altered word becomes physically true in a small, literal way: a door marked "wall" seals shut, a map marked "stairs" manifests a short staircase, or a sign marked "empty" erases one unattended object weighing no more than 50 pounds.
Regional Effects
The region containing the creature's lair is warped by its magic, creating the following effects:
- Within 6 miles of the library, written records subtly rearrange themselves to mention the names of trespassers.
- Within 1 mile of the library, clocks stop at the hour of closing, and spoken words sometimes vanish from written transcripts.
- Animals near the library refuse to make noise after sunset.
- A creature that sleeps within 1 mile of the library may awaken with a black library card tucked beneath its tongue.
If the Closing Silence dies, its effects fade over the course of 1d10 days. Every name on its List appears in the library's oldest ledger, along with one sentence predicting how that creature will next break a rule.

"You were warned at the door. The shelves remember, even when you do not." โ Meredin Vale, last entry in the Veyr Archive ledger
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Closing Silence resembles a towering, faceless librarian assembled from darkness, dust, and loose pages. Its body is draped in a severe coat of midnight-blue leather, its limbs too long and jointed like folded bookmarks. Where its head should be is a smooth oval of black vellum, crossed by a single horizontal slit that opens only when it speaks. Pale hands emerge from its sleeves, each finger ending in a sharpened strip of parchment. Ink crawls beneath its translucent skin in the shapes of names, dates, fines, and increasingly specific threats.
Behavior & Origins
The Closing Silence was born when the last librarian of the sealed Veyr Archive died alone after locking the doors, leaving behind an unfinished list of patrons who had violated the rules. The creature now considers every library a potential territory, but it is strongest in the archive beneath the old city of Bellweather, where it has catalogued generations of thieves, rebels, forbidden scholars, and careless whisperers. It does not hate intruders; it classifies them. The party is already on its List, entered by the missing archivist Meredin Vale, who wants the characters to recover a book containing the creature's original name. The Closing Silence may bargain for that book, but it will not permit anyone to leave without settling their fines.
Running The Closing Silence
Tactics
The Closing Silence begins by activating Absolute Quiet, then uses Check-Out Stamp to disable spellcasters and Redacted Name against the most dangerous listed character. It uses Turn the Page and Ink Between the Shelves to separate the party behind shifting stacks, attacking isolated targets while shelves block line of sight. When bloodied, it abandons direct exchanges and chains teleportation with legendary actions, targeting anyone attempting to erase a name; it fights to the death if the List or its original ledger is threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature through books that slam shut, fresh black names appearing in the margins, and a silent bell swinging above the reading room.
- Play it as a precise, offended administrator: it pauses to correct terminology, gestures toward posted rules, and treats violence as an overdue procedural consequence.
- Let clever characters exploit the library by destroying shelves, altering catalog records, or discovering that the creature cannot willingly attack someone whose name has been crossed out in the original ledger.
- For a weaker party, remove Shush and reduce Check-Out Stamp to 4d8 damage; for a stronger party, give the Closing Silence 3 uses of Shush per day and let its lair action move shelves through occupied spaces.
Loot
- The Black Library Card — A weightless card bearing the holder's true name. Once per day, it can cast silence centered on the holder, but each use adds a new rule to the card in the Closing Silence's handwriting.
- The Unfinished List — A strip of living vellum containing the names of the party and dozens of influential figures. Crossing out a name grants that creature advantage on saving throws against the Closing Silence, but causes the named person to feel a supernatural urge to visit the library.
- Meredin Vale's Brass Key — A tarnished key stamped with the words THIRD BASEMENT. It opens a sealed archive beneath the library, where the creature's original name and the missing archivist may both be found.
