"Please, friend. Just one little jar. The interest is killing us." โ the buzzing inside Mallow Venn's abandoned apiary
Lore & Description
Appearance
This squat, weather-darkened beehive hangs from a crooked branch or rests on a three-legged wooden stand. Its wax is streaked with gray, as though mixed with candle soot, and scraps of legal parchment are embedded between the combs. A brass tag bearing the name Mallow Venn dangles from its entrance. Bees pour from the hive in anxious ribbons, their honey unusually dark and faintly warm, while a soft voice seems to buzz from within whenever someone approaches.
Behavior & Origins
When the beekeeper Mallow Venn died, his creditors claimed every jar, hive, and tool in the yard. This hive alone escaped, carrying on Mallow's final instruction: collect enough honey to settle the account. It now treats every kindness as a loan and every visitor as a potential debtor. The hive wants to deliver 100 pounds of honey to the countinghouse of Vellum and Pike before the next new moon, though the debt has already been paid three times over through forged interest. A sympathetic character may calm it by finding Mallow's original ledger and proving the account fraudulent.
Running Indentured Honeyhive
Tactics
The hive begins with Honeyed Claim, especially against a creature that appears sympathetic, then uses Sting against anyone who has accepted Honey Drip or offered aid. It clings to walls and corners while its bees harry isolated targets, using Debt Collection as soon as a debtor is wounded. If reduced below 3 hit points, it retreats toward its hidden ledger and begs for mercy; if cornered, it fights until destroyed rather than abandon the debt.
DM Tips
- Telegraph danger with posted debt notices, empty honey jars labeled with names, and villagers nervously refusing free healing or food.
- Give the hive a plaintive, bureaucratic voice: it apologizes constantly, cites exact interest rates, and calls attacks 'lawful recovery.'
- The hive is most dangerous when characters accept its healing or pity its plight; make those choices useful but visibly costly.
- For a weaker party, remove Debt Collection; for a stronger party, add a second Sting attack when the hive uses Honeyed Claim.
Loot
- Mallow Venn's Brass Debt Tag — A tarnished tag bearing the beekeeper's name; the creditors of Vellum and Pike will pay to recover it, while the original ledger can expose their fraudulent claim.
- Jar of Indebted Honey — A thumb-sized jar of dark honey. Eating it restores 2 hit points, but the eater dreams that a swarm is patiently reciting their name and asking for payment.
