Emberwyrm Scale Mail

🛡️ Armor (scale mail) Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
AC 1
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A suit of scale mail forged from iridescent plates that shift in color from ember-orange to deep bronze. The mail bears a subtle, lifecycle-like pattern along each plate, as if tiny scales are frozen in motion. The clasp at the neck holds a small, blackened scale from a long-forgotten drake. When worn, the armor hums with a faint, warm glow that grows brighter when exposed to intense heat.

Fireborn Fortitude Your dragon-forged scales grant resilience to heat. You have resistance to fire damage while wearing this armor. In addition, the armor’s magic adds a +1 bonus to your AC (already reflected by the +1 in armor_class).
Blazing Ward (charges 7) As an action, you can expend 1 charge to emit a radiant, searing aura. For 1 minute, you shed bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light 20 feet beyond. While the aura lasts, any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of you takes 1d6 fire damage (Constitution save to halve, DC 14). The aura ends early if you use this property again or after 1 minute.
Flame Ward (reaction, 0–1 per round, charges 7) When you are hit by a fire-based attack, you can expend 1 charge to gain resistance to fire damage until the start of your next turn. If you reduce the damage to 0, the attack still triggers any unrelated effects as normal.
Ember Mantle The scales are warm to the touch and shed heat in the wearer’s vicinity. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened while wearing this armor. Additionally, you can, as a bonus action, shed a wave of heat to steam out of your armor; this grants you advantage on one athletics or acrobatics check of your choice during your next turn.

Lore

Legends tell of blacksmiths who bargained with a dragon of the volcanic depths to craft armor from its shed scales. Such armor is said to grant not only protection but a measure of the dragon’s fiery temperament, shaping the wearer’s will as much as their shield arm.

History

Crafted in the volcanic forges beneath Mount Kharaz by a master smith who swore fealty to a red dragon named Vorganth. The scales were tempered in lava and cooled with river water from a sacred spring. The armor has passed through fire-wielders and battlefield captains alike, each claiming the Emberwyrm Scale Mail hardened their resolve and burned away hesitation in battle.
