The Lonesome Teaspoon

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (teaspoon) Very Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

This delicate teaspoon is fashioned from tarnished moon-silver, its narrow bowl reflecting faces that are not present. Fine gold filigree winds around the handle in the shape of curling steam, but the pattern ends abruptly at a small empty socket near the pommel. Inside the bowl, tiny engravings depict fragments of forgotten moments: a child's first snowfall, a battlefield beneath red banners, an unopened letter, and two spoons resting together on a saucer. When dipped into liquid, the spoon stirs without being touched, and the liquid briefly takes on the color of the memory it has summoned.

The Taste of Memory While attuned to the teaspoon, you have advantage on Intelligence (History) checks made to recall information you have personally encountered. You also have advantage on saving throws against effects that erase, alter, or read your memories.
Steep a Memory As an action, you can place the teaspoon in a cup or other container of liquid and stir for 1 minute, expending 1 charge. The next creature to drink at least a sip of that liquid within 10 minutes must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or vividly relive one memory from its own past that is emotionally connected to a subject, person, or question you name while stirring. The memory appears to the drinker and to you as a silent, sensory scene lasting up to 1 minute. A creature can willingly fail this saving throw.
Serve the Recollection As an action, you can touch a creature with the teaspoon and expend 3 charges. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or you experience one specific memory the target consciously recalls, chosen by the target if it is willing or by you if it is not. The memory can originate at any point in the target's life and lasts for up to 10 minutes of subjective time. This effect reveals no thoughts or memories the target cannot presently recall, and it does not reveal the target's thoughts about the memory.
Stir the Past Once per dawn, you can expend 5 charges to cast modify memory from the teaspoon, requiring no material components and using DC 17 for the spell's saving throw. The spell can affect only a memory of an event that occurred within the previous 24 hours, and the altered event can last no longer than 10 minutes. The teaspoon cannot create a memory of an event that never occurred; it can only suppress, clarify, or alter details of a real memory.
The Empty Socket A small, perfectly shaped socket in the teaspoon's handle is meant to hold its missing sibling. As an action once per dawn, you can learn the exact direction of the sibling and whether it is on the same plane of existence. If it is on your plane, you also learn its approximate distance: within 1 mile, within 10 miles, within 100 miles, or farther away. This property fails if the sibling is inside an antimagic field or on a different plane.
A Pair Apart The teaspoon cannot be used to willingly alter the memories of its attuned wielder. If its missing sibling is ever brought within 30 feet of it, both spoons glow with warm amber light, and the attuned wielder immediately knows the most direct route to the sibling. While the pair remains within 30 feet of each other, the charges of both items reset at dawn, and each item regains 1 additional expended charge.

Lore

The teaspoon was made for the Mnemonic Tea House, an establishment said to have existed in every major city at once. Its proprietors served no ordinary tea; customers drank their happiest memories, mourned with their dead, or paid to forget a single unbearable hour. The teaspoons were created as a matched pair so that one spoon could draw out a memory while the other returned it. One vanished during the Tea House's final night, leaving its sibling forever restless and incomplete.

History

According to surviving accounts, the pair belonged to Ilyra Venn, a memory-surgeon who used them to rescue soldiers from traumatic recollections. During a coup, Ilyra hid one spoon inside the memory of a dying witness and carried the other into exile. The witness survived but could no longer remember where the spoon was hidden. Since then, collectors, spies, and grieving monarchs have sought the missing sibling, while the Lonesome Teaspoon has passed from hand to hand, always stirring toward its lost companion.
