Mara Crumbwell
A warmhearted baker whose loaves rise with hope and collapse under despair
Mara Crumbwell runs the Dawnrise Bakery, where every loaf reflects the town’s mood: golden and airy after good news, dense and bitter when fear takes hold. She laughs easily, but keeps a small locked jar of coins beneath the flour bins, saving for a journey she may never be able to make.
Appearance
Mara is a broad-shouldered human woman in her late forties, with flour permanently dusting her dark braids and a burn scar across one palm. She wears a blue apron embroidered with little suns, though several of the stitched suns have been carefully snipped away. Her bakery smells wonderful even when the day’s bread has failed, thanks to cinnamon, orange peel, and a pot of strong tea always simmering by the oven.
Personality & voice
Mara is brisk, affectionate, and nosy in the manner of someone who feeds people before asking questions. She speaks in baking metaphors—“Don’t knead trouble,” “Let that thought proof,” and “We’ll see what the oven says”—and taps a wooden spoon against her wrist when worried. She insists that every customer take a heel of bread for the road, then quietly watches their face for signs that the town’s spirits are improving.
What they want
Mara is saving 300 gold pieces to buy passage to a distant prison colony, where her estranged daughter is serving a life sentence for a crime Mara believes she did not commit. She needs the money within six weeks, before the colony’s annual transport leaves, and will take catering work, dangerous deliveries, or adventurers’ commissions to reach the sum. Mara refuses to beg publicly because the town has already suffered enough, but she will trade her best recipes, supplies, and local knowledge for honest help.
Secret
Mara’s daughter did commit the crime—but only to protect Mara, taking the blame for a fire Mara accidentally started while sabotaging a corrupt magistrate’s records. Mara has told herself the truth would free her daughter, yet she has never confessed because the magistrate now controls the transport permits and could have Mara arrested as well. If the secret comes out, Mara’s desperate savings become evidence, and the party must decide whether to expose her, bargain with the magistrate, or help clear both women’s names.
Plot hooks
- After a beloved town elder dies, every loaf in the bakery comes out flat and gray; Mara begs the characters to find what is poisoning the town’s morale before her business—and her hope—collapses.
- Mara’s locked coin jar is stolen, and the thief leaves behind a prison token that suggests her daughter’s sentence is being deliberately extended.
- A magistrate offers Mara the missing passage money in exchange for baking a ceremonial cake laced with a sleeping draught for a visiting political rival.
