The Orchard of Last Tastes
A vanished grove where every tree remembers the favorite fruit of its dead planter
Beyond a leaning stone wall lies an orchard absent from every map made in the last seventy years. Its trees bear impossible harvests—moon-bright pears, blue plums that taste of summer, and apples spiced like mulled wine—yet each fruit carries a fragment of the person who planted its tree.
Atmosphere
The air is cool and sweet with overlapping scents: citrus, wet earth, cinnamon, and fruit just beginning to rot. Leaves whisper even when there is no wind, and somewhere among the rows a wooden gate creaks open and shut. Sunlight rests on the grass as though late afternoon has been trapped here, while distant birds call in voices that sound almost like remembered names.
Notable features
A moss-covered sign at the entrance bears only the words, "Plant what you cannot bear to lose." Each tree has a small iron plaque naming its planter and fruit, and touching a plaque briefly reveals a sensory memory from that person's life. At the orchard's center stands a dry stone well filled with fallen fruit; climbing into it leads to a root-choked chamber containing pruning tools, old letters, and a locked brass map case.
Who you'll meet
Mara Venn, an elderly groundskeeper who claims she was planted here rather than born, will trade directions for one honest memory. The Orchard Boy, a silent child with muddy hands, gathers fruit for trees whose planters have been forgotten and points accusingly at anyone who steals. Finally, the translucent shade of Elian Thrice-Buried tends a pear tree and begs the characters to find the person who planted it, insisting that the tree is dying of unfinished business.
Secrets & dangers
Eating a fruit grants a vivid memory from its planter, but eating three from different trees causes the eater to mistake one borrowed memory for their own until dawn. The oldest trees conceal root-bound corpses whose unfinished regrets animate the orchard's thorned vines; damaging a tree causes those vines to attack and summons its planter's shade. The locked map case contains the last map that recorded the orchard, dated seventy years ago, and opening it causes the entrance path to shift while something beneath the well begins climbing.
Plot hooks
- A noble asks the characters to recover a peach from the tree planted by her supposedly dead ancestor, whose memory may prove that the noble family has hidden a murder.
- A stolen orchard fruit causes a respected local magistrate to remember a crime committed by someone else, and the characters must return to the grove before the borrowed memory fades.
- The orchard has begun appearing in dreams across the region because one unmarked tree is bearing black fruit; finding its planter may reveal why the grove vanished from all maps.
