Lair
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the creature can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; it can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Falling Index. A shower of catalog cards and loose pages fills a 10-foot-radius area within 60 feet. Creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 7 (2d6) slashing damage and become blinded until the end of their next turn.
- Shelf Shift. One bookshelf, stack of crates, or comparable object within 60 feet slides up to 20 feet in a straight line. Creatures in its path must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
- Uncatalogued Word. The lair whispers a forbidden word into the mind of one creature within 60 feet. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or involuntarily speak the monster's name aloud, triggering Names Have Weight.

"After the last candle dies, the books begin listening." โ warning scratched beneath the Bellweather Athenaeum's front desk
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Unspoken Quiet resembles a tall, vaguely humanoid absence draped in strips of shadow, gray dust, and torn catalog paper. Its surface has no face, only a smooth hollow where features should be, occasionally crossed by pale lines of handwritten text. Long, jointed arms end in fingers like bookmark ribbons, and its movements make pages turn without wind. In bright light it appears as a translucent mass of black ink suspended in water.
Behavior & Origins
The Unspoken Quiet forms when a library is abandoned after a death, a censorship, or a secret that was never recorded. It considers every book in its territory a sealed chamber and every spoken word an intrusion. It does not merely hunt intruders; it edits them, stealing names, memories, and voices to add to the library's invisible catalog. The monster currently haunts the shuttered Bellweather Athenaeum and wants the adventurers to recover the missing final volume of the Librarian-General's memoir, whose title contains the first name it ever had.
Running The Unspoken Quiet
Tactics
The Unspoken Quiet opens from concealment with Margin Note against the loudest or most magically dangerous speaker, then uses Turn the Page to strike from behind shelves. It uses Hushed Dominion when several creatures cluster together and tries to provoke names, commands, and panicked cries through telepathic whispers. When bloodied, it retreats through furniture and darkness, attacking anyone who pursues; it fights to the death if the final volume is threatened, but flees if reduced below 20 hit points and has no Echo marks.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with books opening by themselves, dust forming footprints that stop abruptly, and faint page-turning in rooms where no one is moving.
- Play its telepathy as intrusive editorial notes rather than a normal voice: "Incorrect," "Too loud," or "That name is mine now."
- Reward players who communicate through gestures or writing; make speaking the monster's name an obvious but tempting danger, especially when a false name or title can be used instead.
- For a weaker party, reduce the monster's hit points to 85 and remove the psychic damage from Margin Note; for a stronger party, let Names Have Weight hold up to 10 Echo marks and give Hushed Dominion a recharge of 4-6.
Loot
- The Librarian-General's Final Volume — A book whose title has been scratched away. Its final pages describe a sealed vault beneath the Athenaeum and contain the monster's original name.
- Mute Bookmark — A strip of black vellum that, when placed between a book's pages, prevents anyone within 10 feet from speaking above a whisper for 1 hour. It is valuable to spies, assassins, and archivists.
- Ink of Unmaking — A stoppered vial of living black ink. Written words made with it cannot be read aloud by anyone who sees them, though the writing remains visible.
