Lore & Description
Appearance
The Leechroot Colossus is a colossal leech that has a chilling way of disguising itself as a fallen log. Its body is a thick, moss-kissed cylinder of dark brown and green, with bark-like plates and rings of suction along its sides. When still, it resembles a dead, weathered log perfect for crossing a forest path. A maw lurks at one end, ringed teeth hidden beneath a slick, sap-glossed lip, ready to latch onto any warm-blooded creature that passes. If disturbed, the bark-like armor ripples and parts, revealing a glistening, rubbery mass within that can lunge forward with surprising speed. It uses its camouflage to ambush prey, feeding on life sap and sometimes scattering spores that help nourish the forest floor.
Behavior & Origins
Long before ferried travelers and towns learned to fight forests, the Leechroot Colossus haunted fallen timber, feeding on sap and vitality. It spends decades buried in a log, perfecting its mimicry so that even the keen-eyed can mistake it for a simple obstacle in the woods. When prey nears, it reveals a brutal maw and a mass of sinewy tongues, draining life with every bite. As a predator attuned to the forest's cycles, it moves with the seasons, shedding its bark-like exterior to reveal its true, writhing form and resuming its patient wait for the next traveler to unwittingly step into its trap.
