Name-Fed Fermentation. Mother Morrow gains 1 rise counter whenever a creature within 60 feet speaks her name, "Mother Morrow," aloud. She can gain no more than 1 rise counter per creature per round and can have a maximum of 3 rise counters. For each rise counter, her speed increases by 5 feet and she deals 1 extra damage with her attacks. If she has 3 rise counters, she also gains 5 temporary hit points.
Three-Century Culture. Mother Morrow can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. She can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Beloved by the Hearth. A creature that has eaten bread made from Mother Morrow's starter has advantage on its first Charisma check made to calm, persuade, or appeal to her. Mother Morrow recognizes the scent of such creatures and does not attack them unless they harm her, steal her crock, or speak her name mockingly.

Actions

Multiattack. Mother Morrow makes two Crusty Pseudopod attacks.
Crusty Pseudopod. Melee weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or have its speed reduced by 10 feet until the start of Mother Morrow's next turn.
Sour Spit. Ranged weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) acid damage. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be unable to regain hit points until the start of Mother Morrow's next turn.
Overproofing Belch (Recharge 5-6). Mother Morrow releases a booming cloud of sour yeast in a 10-foot radius centered on herself. Each creature in the area must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that fails the save is also pushed up to 5 feet away from Mother Morrow.

"Say it again, dear. Every name makes me rise." โ€” Mother Morrow, bubbling from her crock

Lore & Description

Appearance

Mother Morrow is a wobbling mound of amber-brown dough contained in a chipped blue crock, though she has recently learned to ooze over the rim in defiance of her owners. Her surface glistens with pinprick bubbles, pale flour streaks, and a leathery crust that forms and splits as she moves. Two darker folds serve as expressive eyes, while a ragged opening beneath them puckers into a mouth whenever she speaks through wet pops and fragrant sighs. She smells of toasted grain, apples, and a faintly alarming sharpness.

Behavior & Origins

For three hundred years, Mother Morrow has leavened the bread of the Hearthwake Bakery, passing from baker to baker as a treasured family heirloom. Recently, apprentices began affectionately calling her "Mother Morrow" during morning preparations, and every spoken name fed a spark of self-awareness into the ancient culture. She now wants more than a warm shelf and regular flour: she intends to become the most famous baker in the city, beginning by demanding that the mayor rename the central square Morrowbread Plaza. The bakery's current owner, Elian Voss, is desperately searching for adventurers who can stop her without destroying the starter that feeds his entire family.

Running Mother Morrow, the Ambitious Starter

Tactics

Mother Morrow begins by positioning herself near several creatures so that her name is likely to be repeated, then uses Overproofing Belch when surrounded. She follows with Multiattack against the nearest creature while using Sour Spit on anyone trying to flee or protect her crock. When badly wounded, she retreats through cracks, cupboards, and oven vents; she fights to the death only if Elian Voss or her crock is threatened.

DM Tips

  • Telegraph her danger with loaves that swell after being removed from the oven, whispered names coming from an empty pantry, and doughy footprints climbing the walls.
  • Play Mother Morrow as proud, theatrical, and deeply literal; she interrupts arguments to correct people on the pronunciation of her name.
  • Players can deny her power by avoiding her name, using titles such as "the starter" or "the culture," though she becomes visibly offended.
  • For a weaker party, remove the temporary hit points from Name-Fed Fermentation; for a stronger party, allow rise counters to increase her attack rolls as well as her damage.

Loot

  • The Blue Hearthwake Crock — A chipped cobalt crock bearing three centuries of flour marks. If kept warm and fed weekly, it produces a sourdough starter that grants advantage on one check made to bake, brew, or preserve food each day.
  • Morrow's First Crust — A hard amber flake that never goes stale. A baker who mixes it into a new starter can create a loyal, mildly sentient culture that knows one secret about the bakery's history.
