"Do not reach for the life you were promised. It is hungry for your hands." โ Ilyra Venn, last cartographer of Vael Turog
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Last Reflection appears to be a broad, perfectly still puddle no deeper than a few inches, its edges feathered into transparent films of silver, blue, and rose. Its surface reflects not the world above it but a brighter one: ruined towers stand whole, dead trees are green, and the sky is always clear at sunset. Faces in the reflection smile a moment before their living counterparts do. Beneath the liquid, pale tendrils and fragments of impossible architecture drift like drowned memories.
Behavior & Origins
The Last Reflection was born when the city of Vael Turog vanished during the failed ascension of its queen, Seressa the Unforgotten. The puddle is the surviving echo of the city's final moment, and it still guards the queen's nonexistent throne room beneath a plaza that is now only cracked stone. It attacks anyone who reaches toward the reflected city because it believes they are trying to steal the last place where Vael Turog still exists. A powerful hook is the request of an old cartographer named Ilyra Venn, who wants the party to retrieve a reflected black key from the puddle; the key may open a door in the real world that has been absent for three centuries.
Running The Last Reflection
Tactics
The Last Reflection begins by allowing its idealized images to draw characters close, then uses Drowning Invitation to pull as many victims as possible into reach. It uses its tendrils to grapple isolated targets and spends legendary actions on Drag Beneath against anyone already restrained or charmed. When reduced below half its hit points, it spreads across the battlefield, blocks access to the place it protects, and fights to the death unless the characters can prove they are preserving rather than plundering the vanished city.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with footprints that stop at the puddle's edge, drowned handprints on nearby stone, and reflections that move independently of the people they depict.
- Describe each character's reflection showing a specific lost desire; give the player a brief chance to narrate what they see before asking for the Wisdom saving throw.
- The ooze speaks in overlapping voices from the reflected world, addressing characters by names used only by dead relatives or former friends.
- For a weaker party, reduce the psychic damage of Drowning Invitation to 18 (4d8) and remove the incapacitated effect from Drag Beneath; for a stronger party, increase the reflection's charm range to 60 feet and give the ooze 4 legendary actions.
Loot
- The Black Key of Vael Turog — A key visible only in the puddle's reflection. If removed without destroying the ooze, it becomes solid for 24 hours and opens one sealed doorway connected to the vanished city.
- Seressa's Last Promise — A silver signet recovered from the bottom of the puddle, bearing the queen's impossible oath. It can serve as proof that Vael Turog existed and grants advantage on Charisma checks made to convince scholars or spirits of that fact.
- Vial of Better Rain — A sealed glass vial containing a few drops of the reflection's liquid. When poured onto dead soil, it makes flowers bloom for one day, but each blossom bears the face of someone the user has lost.
