"I left the eyes for last. It has not forgiven me for that." โ Master Odran Vale, unfinished journal entry
Lore & Description
Appearance
This hunched humanoid statue is carved from pale gray marble veined with rusty red mineral stains. Its left side remains roughly blocked out, with angular shoulders and a featureless cheek, while its right side bears an unnervingly delicate eye and a half-finished smile. Broken chisels protrude from its elbows, ribs, and fingers. Every movement sheds flakes of stone, revealing fresh, wet-looking marble beneath.
Behavior & Origins
The effigy was abandoned by Master Odran Vale after he decided its face looked too much like his dead daughter. Left in a locked studio beneath the Old Bell Foundry, it awoke years later and began stealing tools, statues, and pieces of other sculptures to finish itself. It is driven by an obsessive need to discover what its completed face will resemble. The effigy currently seeks the vanished workshop of Odran Vale, rumored to lie beneath Saint Orra's cemetery, where it believes the sculptor kept the original sketches of its face.
Running Self-Carved Effigy
Tactics
The effigy begins by hurling a chisel at a distant or lightly armored target, then closes to use Multiattack against whoever carries the most tools or resembles a sculptor. It uses Carving Rush to push enemies away from valuable statues or toward hazards, and it retreats through narrow passages where its climbing speed lets it attack from walls and ceilings. When bloodied, it becomes reckless, fighting until destroyed because it knows its next body is waiting elsewhere.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with fresh marble dust, stolen tools, chisel marks that continue across walls, and statues whose faces have been partially removed.
- Play it as silent and obsessive: it tilts its unfinished head toward reflections, imitates the poses of statues, and communicates by scratching simple words into stone.
- If the party is weaker, have it reappear only at a known nearby sculpture and make the completion check easier; for a stronger party, let it relocate to any suitable stone within 3 miles and begin with a prepared ambush.
- Make the completion option visible during the fight: a character who studies the effigy's face can notice that the missing features match fragments found in its abandoned workshop.
Loot
- Odran's Silver-Edged Chisel — A masterwork chisel engraved with the initials O.V. It grants advantage on one sculptor's tools check made to complete the effigy.
- Marble Face Fragment — A curved shard bearing part of the effigy's intended expression. It matches a fragment hidden beneath Saint Orra's cemetery and can lead the party to Odran Vale's lost workshop.
