A Joke Without a Punchline. The godlaugh echo cannot knowingly speak a lie. It can evade questions, answer with technically true statements, or laugh instead of answering, but any direct statement it makes is honest as it understands it.
Thin as a Memory. The godlaugh echo can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. If it ends its turn inside an object, it takes 1 force damage and is pushed to the nearest unoccupied space.
The First Offer. When a creature that can hear it first becomes hostile toward the godlaugh echo, the echo immediately offers that creature one honest bargain, if it has not already done so. The creature can accept or refuse. The bargain must be a simple request that the echo can fulfill with its Offer the Bargain action, and the echo cannot knowingly twist the stated terms. Once a creature accepts or refuses, it cannot receive another bargain from that echo.

Actions

Needle of Laughter. Ranged spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one creature. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) psychic damage. The target hears a private joke in the dead god's voice.
Offer the Bargain (1/Day). The godlaugh echo offers one creature within 30 feet a fulfilled bargain, provided the creature has not already accepted or refused the echo's first offer. The request must be no more powerful than creating a mundane object worth 5 gp or less, revealing the safest visible route to a named location, opening an unlocked door, or answering one question with a brief and honest answer. If the request is impossible, too vague, or beyond this limit, the echo says so honestly and the bargain is wasted. The echo fulfills an accepted request immediately, then vanishes if it has no reason to remain.
Unfinished Punchline. Each creature within 10 feet that can hear the godlaugh echo must succeed on a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw or take 2 psychic damage and be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this echo's Unfinished Punchline for 24 hours.

"I can give you what you ask. I only wish I remembered why that was funny." โ€” Mirth-At-The-Edge-of-Dawn

Lore & Description

Appearance

A godlaugh echo appears as a fist-sized knot of translucent violet smoke, constantly folding in on itself like a sound trapped in glass. Two pale golden eyes blink within it, and a crooked crescent of teeth appears whenever it speaks. Its laughter arrives a heartbeat late, sometimes from behind the listener, sometimes from inside their own skull. Flecks of tarnished divine script drift through its vaporous body and vanish when touched.

Behavior & Origins

Godlaugh echoes are the final remnants of a dead deity's sense of humor, shed when its worship ended and its name was forgotten. Each one remembers that something was once funny but not what the joke was, and it wanders through ruins, battlefields, and lonely roads searching for the missing punchline. An echo named Mirth-At-The-Edge-of-Dawn has recently appeared beneath the abandoned temple of Saint Orra, offering bargains in exchange for stories about anything that made the speaker laugh. It desperately wants someone to tell it the joke that killed its god.

Running Godlaugh Echo

Tactics

The godlaugh echo opens by offering an honest bargain, preferring to reveal a safe escape route or answer a question rather than fight. If attacked, it drifts through walls and uses Unfinished Punchline to disrupt a cluster before harassing an isolated target with Needles of Laughter. It flees when reduced to 2 hit points unless someone has promised to help recover its missing joke.

DM Tips

  • Telegraph the echo with delayed laughter, divine words scratched backward into walls, and victims who insist they received exactly what they asked for.
  • Play its voice as delighted, confused, and painfully sincere; it should never lie, but it may misunderstand metaphor or find tragedy hilarious.
  • Let clever players exploit narrow but useful bargains, while refusing requests that require major magic, wealth, or direct harm.
  • For a stronger encounter, give the echo two uses of Offer the Bargain and increase the Unfinished Punchline save DC to 12; for a weaker party, remove its damage resistance.

Loot

  • Cracked Divine Bell — A thumb-sized bell that produces no sound when rung, but faint laughter can be heard from the nearest empty room. It bears the erased symbol of the echo's dead god.
  • Slip of Honest Gold — A thin coin of dull gold stamped with the words ASK CLEARLY on one side and I REMEMBER on the other. It always turns up in the pocket of someone who accepted a bargain.
