"I saw my daughter alive in that water. Then the water learned my name." โ Mara Venn, sole survivor of the Bellwether Flood
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Promised Reflection appears to be a broad, perfectly still puddle, usually no deeper than a finger's breadth and bordered by nothing but ordinary stone, mud, or dust. Its surface reflects a vivid world that does not exist: healed scars, restored homes, dead loved ones smiling in sunlight, and versions of onlookers untouched by grief. Beneath that impossible image, black-blue fluid churns with pale hands, drowned faces, and silver letters that form and reform into names. When threatened, the puddle rises into a towering, translucent shape whose edges constantly collapse back into liquid. Its interior is full of suspended doors, bridges, gardens, and other fragments of the life each victim most desires.
Behavior & Origins
The Promised Reflection is born where desperate wishes soak into cursed water: a battlefield well, a flooded shrine, or a mirror shattered over a mass grave. It does not merely feed on bodies; it feeds on the instant when hope becomes stronger than caution. Every person who looks into it is entered into the Ledger of Longing, and the creature patiently revisits those names through dreams, rain puddles, polished cups, and dark windows. The party is already on its list because someone in the group saw the puddle in a vision before reaching its lair. The creature wants the party to enter its reflected world willingly, where it can preserve their ideal selves as permanent inhabitants.
Running The Promised Reflection
Tactics
The Promised Reflection begins combat by using A Better World to freeze the most emotionally vulnerable character, then uses Drowning Grasp to pull that character into the puddle while remaining spread across the battlefield. It uses Liquefy the Boundary to appear beneath isolated targets and spends legendary actions on Show the Answer to make victims approach it. When reduced below half its hit points, it uses Rewrite the Face and focuses on creatures already grappled; it fights to the death if any member of the party remains in its ledger, but flees through reflective water if everyone escapes its range and no one is restrained.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with puddles that reflect absent landmarks, footprints appearing beneath the water, and written names briefly surfacing in silver letters.
- Give each character a distinct glimpse of a personal better world, and describe the creature's telepathy as the voice of someone the character trusts.
- The puddle's surface can be covered with opaque material, reducing the reach of A Better World and preventing creatures from being entered into the ledger while it is fully obscured.
- For a weaker party, remove the cold damage from Drowning Grasp and reduce all save DCs to 16; for a stronger party, allow the creature to use Drown the Reaching as a legendary action for 2 actions instead of 3.
Loot
- The Silver Ledger — A waterlogged strip of black glass engraved with the names of everyone the creature has ever drowned. A name can be scratched away with diamond dust, ending the creature's ability to track that person.
- Vial of Impossible Water — A sealed vial containing a reflection of the drinker's greatest desire. Drinking it grants advantage on one saving throw against being charmed, but afterward the drinker dreams of the Promised Reflection calling their name.
- The Unbroken Door — A tiny silver door recovered from the puddle's depths. Set into a wall and opened with a creature's true name, it reveals a fleeting view of a place that person considers home.
