"You may cheat the scale, dearie, but you will not cheat the rise." โ Mother Brindle, Hearthwake Bakery
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Fair-Minded Mother resembles a squat, glossy mound of amber-brown sourdough, roughly the size of a large barrel. Its elastic body constantly bubbles and sighs, releasing the rich scent of toasted grain, honey, and faintly sharp fermentation. Two pale scores across its upper crust open like solemn eyes, while a darker split forms a stern mouth whenever it speaks. Flour-dusted tendrils serve as arms, and its underside leaves delicate lacework patterns wherever it moves.
Behavior & Origins
For three hundred years, the starter known as Mother Brindle was refreshed, divided, and lovingly maintained by the bakers of Hearthwake Bakery. It absorbed generations of recipes, arguments, apologies, and promises until it developed a precise sense of justice. Mother Brindle now believes the bakery should belong to the community that sustained it, not to its current owner, Pellan Voss, who has been watering down the flour and shorting his apprentices. It challenges wrongdoers openly, announces the terms of every confrontation, and honors surrender. A useful hook is the bakery's locked cellar, where Pellan hides the original charter proving that the starterโnot any one bakerโis the legal guardian of Hearthwake's ovens.
Running The Fair-Minded Mother
Tactics
The Fair-Minded Mother begins by declaring the perceived offense and offering the guilty creature one chance to apologize or withdraw. It uses Call Foul and The Scales of the Oven to punish unfair attacks, then closes with Fermented Lash while using Proofing Embrace on the most dangerous combatant. When bloodied, it retreats toward flour bins or dough troughs to use Feed the Culture; it fights to the death only if the bakery, its apprentices, or its charter are threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with warm bread smells, bubbling jars, and small loaves arranged in a deliberate line like courtroom witnesses.
- Roleplay Mother Brindle as stern but affectionate, speaking in the voice of a tired grandmother and insisting on clear terms before violence.
- Let clever characters avoid combat by admitting wrongdoing, returning stolen goods, or agreeing to expose Pellan Voss; the monster values a fair settlement over victory.
- For a weaker party, remove Call Foul and reduce hit points to 58; for a stronger party, give it two animated loaves as allies using the statistics of flying swords with bludgeoning damage.
Loot
- A Pinch of Mother Brindle — A living portion of the ancient starter that remains active for a year if fed weekly. Bread made from it grants the eater advantage on one Persuasion check made within the next 24 hours.
- The Hearthwake Charter — A flour-stained parchment hidden in the bakery cellar, establishing the starter as custodian of the bakery and naming every apprentice who has ever earned a share.
- Crust of the First Loaf — A hard, golden fragment from the bakery's founding loaf. Once per day, a creature holding it can reroll a failed Wisdom saving throw against being frightened or charmed, but must accept the new result.
