"Round and round, dear hearts. If we stop, I might remember what I was." โ the runaway horse, heard beneath the old fairground
Lore & Description
Appearance
This life-sized carousel horse is carved from dark, weather-cracked wood and painted in fading cream, crimson, and turquoise. Its gilded mane has splintered into stiff, needlelike strands, while brass bands encircle its legs and neck. One glass eye is a cheerful blue; the other is a wet, dark brown eye that blinks when no one is looking. A thin iron pole protrudes from its belly, scraping sparks from stone as it runs, and distant calliope music seems to follow wherever it goes.
Behavior & Origins
The horse once belonged to Merry Mallow's Traveling Menagerie, where it carried laughing children in endless circles. One stormy night it tore free from the carousel and discovered that real horses could run without poles, music, or painted smiles. It now gathers horses for a new ride beneath the stars, arranging them in a circle and whispering that someday it will grow flesh, a heartbeat, and a rider who never gets off. The horse knows this transformation is already beginning: it has recently found a pulse beneath its wooden chest. A concrete lead is the abandoned fairground called Mallow's Mile, where twelve stolen horses stand tethered around a broken carousel while the runaway horse searches for its missing original rider, Elsie Vane.
Running Runaway Carousel Horse
Tactics
The carousel horse begins by using Recruiting Call from behind a fence, wagon, or group of real horses, trying to draw mounts away from their riders. It kicks anyone who interferes and uses its speed to circle the battlefield rather than stand and trade blows. If reduced below half its hit points, it flees toward the nearest horse or the abandoned carousel; it fights to the death only if someone threatens Elsie Vane's old saddle, which it keeps hidden in its lair.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its danger with distant calliope music, fresh horseshoe-shaped gouges in the road, and real horses becoming restless before the creature appears.
- Roleplay it with a bright carnival barker's voice that occasionally breaks into frightened whispers; have it refer to living horses as 'new riders' and itself as 'almost real.'
- Recruiting Call should create movement and confusion rather than permanently remove mounts; allow frightened or bonded horses a bonus to their saving throw when their riders speak to them.
- For a weaker party, remove the piercing resistance; for a stronger party, give it two loyal horses that use the Help action for it instead of increasing its damage.
Loot
- Brass Carousel Medallion — A tarnished medallion bearing the mark of Merry Mallow's Traveling Menagerie. It unlocks a storage trunk at Mallow's Mile containing old posters, payment records, and clues to Elsie Vane's disappearance.
- Splinter of the First Pole — A painted wooden shard that hums faintly with calliope music. A creature holding it can calm a frightened horse once per day, but sometimes hears hoofbeats approaching from behind.
