Reach farther. Your better life is only one handspan beneath the water. โ inscription appearing in the puddle
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Unremembered Basin appears at first to be an ordinary puddle, no more than ten feet across. Its water is perfectly still and unnaturally clear, reflecting blue skies, unbroken homes, healthy forests, and the viewer standing in a life untouched by loss. Beneath the surface, pale shapes resembling reaching hands drift through impossible depths. When angered, the puddle rises in thin, glassy sheets, its edges forming the blurred outline of a stone fountain that no longer exists.
Behavior & Origins
The creature was once the Mercy Basin of Bellwether, a consecrated wishing fountain said to show petitioners the future they could build through kindness. When a flood destroyed Bellwether, grief, broken promises, and generations of desperate wishes gave the surviving water a predatory will. The Basin now lures travelers with visions of restored homes and dead loved ones, drowning anyone who tries to touch the reflection. The ruined village of Bellwether still contains a cracked inscription naming the fountain; learning and speaking that name allows a creature to harm the ooze. The Basin wants to find the lost silver coin of Bellwether's founder, believing that returning it to its depths will make its perfect world real.
Running The Unremembered Basin
Tactics
The Basin begins combat by displaying each opponent's greatest desire, using False Depths to freeze the most emotionally vulnerable target before unleashing Drown in the Better World. It pulls isolated creatures toward itself and uses Open the Way on anyone restrained near its center, while keeping obstacles between itself and creatures that have learned its history. Once bloodied, it abandons subtlety and tries to drown the creature carrying knowledge of its former identity; if that creature dies, the Basin fights to the death, but otherwise it flows through cracks and flees.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with reflections that show impossible details: a dead NPC alive, a burned building restored, or the viewer wearing a beloved heirloom they never owned.
- Let players discover the solution through the name Mercy Basin of Bellwether, a cracked fountain plaque, an old villager's testimony, or a surviving silver wishing coin.
- The Basin is not mindless; give it a soft, hopeful voice through ripples and reflected mouths, and have it become furious when called by its former name.
- For a weaker party, reduce Drown in the Better World's damage to 2d6 and remove Open the Way's restrained condition; for a stronger party, increase the save DCs to 14 and give the Basin 10-foot blindsight beyond its normal range.
Loot
- Founderโs Silver Wishing Coin — A tarnished silver coin hidden beneath the Basin's center. It bears Bellwether's original seal and can be used as proof of the creature's former identity or as a key to a sealed chamber beneath the ruined village.
- Shard of Mercy Basin — A piece of blue-green fountain stone that reflects a person as they were before their greatest regret. It can serve as a focus for divination concerning lost places or broken promises.
- Vial of Impossible Water — A small amount of the Basin's water that remains perfectly still even when shaken. Drinking it grants a beautiful vision of a desired future, but the drinker must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 hour.
