"Don't take it away. They were still cold." โ Mara Venn, according to the final entry in the ward ledger
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Last Quilt is a lopsided patchwork blanket made from faded hospital sheets, wool shawls, children's quilts, and strips of burial cloth. Its colors have bled together into bruised purples, jaundiced yellows, and damp gray, while dark rust-colored stains mark the seams. No body fills it, yet it crawls and folds with the slow, desperate motions of someone trying to get comfortable beneath a coverlet. It is always warm to the touch, sometimes feverishly so, and its pockets of fabric rise and fall as though several people are breathing beneath it.
Behavior & Origins
The quilt was assembled during the final weeks of Saint Orla's Plague Ward, when the nurses ran out of clean bedding and stitched together whatever cloth they could find. It covered dozens of patients, including the ward's last caretaker, Mara Venn, who died clutching a brass laundry token sewn into one corner. When the abandoned ward was looted, the quilt awakened and began hunting anyone who carried warmth away from the dead. It wants to be remembered as more than a filthy blanket and seeks the missing brass token, now kept in the reliquary of the Chapel of Kindly Hands.
Running The Last Quilt
Tactics
The Last Quilt hides among beds, laundry, or winter clothing and opens with Ward's Whisper against the warmest-looking target. It then uses Wrap to restrain that creature while lashing at anyone who approaches, preferring isolated victims over a coordinated fight. Once someone speaks aloud what the quilt was used for, it becomes frantic and attacks that person first; it flees through narrow gaps if reduced below 5 hit points unless the brass laundry token is nearby.
DM Tips
- Telegraph its presence with a patchwork trail of damp footprints, inexplicably warm fabric, and muffled coughing from an apparently empty room.
- Play its movements as needy rather than purely murderous: it bunches around lanterns, presses against living bodies, and recoils when someone calls it only a blanket.
- Let players discover its weakness through old ward ledgers, sewn names, or a Medicine or Investigation check rather than requiring a single predetermined clue.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 12 and lower Wrap's escape DC to 10; for a stronger party, give it 27 hit points and allow Ward's Whisper to affect two creatures.
Loot
- Brass Laundry Token — A tarnished token stamped with the initials M.V. and Saint Orla's ward number. Returning it to Mara Venn's grave or the chapel may finally quiet the quilt.
- Patch of the Last Quilt — A warm square of plague-stained fabric that grants advantage on one saving throw against exhaustion from cold, then becomes cold and inert.
