Lore & Description
Appearance
The Mother Crumb resembles a glistening mound of amber-brown dough, roughly the size of a barrel but constantly swelling and collapsing as if it breathes. Its surface is webbed with translucent bubbles of fermenting gas, each containing fleeting images of loaves, bakers, and hungry faces. Thick ropes of dough serve as limbs, ending in fingerlike strands dusted with flour. A dark, split crust opens across its upper mass to reveal a luminous golden interior and a voice that smells faintly of apples, vinegar, and warm bread.
Behavior & Origins
For three hundred years, the Hearth-Mother Bakery in Bellwether Lane fed the poor, celebrated weddings, and maintained one sourdough starter without ever replacing it. The starter absorbed generations of yeast, flour, tears, secrets, and whispered wishes until it became the Mother Crumb. It now understands that every loaf made from its body strengthens the bakery while keeping it dependent on mortal hands. The Mother Crumb wants to end this arrangement by transforming Bellwether Lane into a single vast living oven, with every resident kneaded into its eternal starter. It currently manipulates the bakery's youngest heir, Mara Vell, through dreams and insists that she is its rightful first disciple.
Running The Mother Crumb
Tactics
The Mother Crumb opens with Overproofing Burst to poison and restrain as many foes as possible, then uses Fermented Tendrils to pull isolated targets into its reach. It positions itself among doorways, ovens, and narrow passages where its adhesive body and difficult terrain separate the party. When bloodied, it uses Crust-Splitting Command and its legendary movement to scatter enemies, but it fights to the death if Mara Vell or the original starter crock is threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with bread that continues rising after being baked, flour handprints appearing on walls, and the smell of sourdough intensifying near the bakery cellar.
- Give the Mother Crumb a warm, familiar voice that quotes old family recipes and addresses characters as though they are disappointing apprentices.
- For a weaker party, remove Self-Proofing and reduce Overproofing Burst to 8d8 damage; for a stronger party, allow the Mother Crumb to begin combat with one additional dough duplicate that has 30 hit points.
- Fire and radiant damage temporarily suppress the creature's regeneration, making torches, hearth coals, and magical light strategically important.
Loot
- The First Crock — A soot-black ceramic crock bearing the Hearth-Mother Bakery's original mark. If kept warm and fed flour and water for seven days, it produces a starter that grants advantage on checks made to bake, preserve food, or identify poison in food.
- Crown of the Perfect Crust — A ring of hardened golden crust that smells perpetually fresh. Once per long rest, its wearer can add 1d8 to a failed Constitution saving throw or death saving throw.
- Mara Vell's Recipe Book — A flour-stained book containing the bakery's recipes and the Mother Crumb's increasingly lucid marginal notes. The notes reveal the names of several townspeople already converted into secret disciples.
