Pity Makes It Stronger. When a creature within 30 feet uses an action to comfort the snowman, expresses pity for it, or apologizes to it, the snowman gains 2 temporary hit points and has advantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn. The snowman can benefit from this trait only once per turn.
Refusal to Melt. The snowman doesn't need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep. If it is reduced to 0 hit points by damage other than fire, it collapses into a mound of snow but reforms with 1 hit point at the next midnight unless its scarf is removed and buried beneath at least 1 foot of earth.

Actions

Snowball. Ranged weapon Attack: +2 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4+1) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature that has pitied the snowman since the end of the snowman's last turn, it has disadvantage on the attack's damage roll.
Icy Hug. Melee weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4+1) cold damage. If the target is a Small or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 10 Strength saving throw or be grappled by the snowman until the end of the snowman's next turn. The snowman can have only one creature grappled this way.
Mournful Stare. One creature within 15 feet that can see the snowman's button eyes must succeed on a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to willingly move closer to the snowman until the end of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this snowman's Mournful Stare for 24 hours.

Lore & Description

Appearance

This small, lumpy snowman stands on two uneven snowballs, its body packed with twigs and frozen leaves. Two black buttons stare from its round face above a carrot nose that has gone gray at the tip. A faded red scarf is wrapped tightly around its neck, its frayed end stiff with frost. Its stick arms tremble constantly, and wherever it walks, tiny handprints appear in the snow as though an unseen child is still building it.

Behavior & Origins

A grieving child named Elian built the snowman beside the grave of an older sibling during the year's first snowfall. Elian begged it not to melt before spring, and something in the snow answered. The Pitybound Snowman wanders wherever lonely children or mourning families gather, seeking kind words that briefly make its frozen heart feel warm. It does not understand death; it only understands that people who pity it eventually leave. The snowman now wants to find Elian, who was sent away to live with relatives in the village of Bellwether, and drag him back to the grave before the thaw.

Running Pitybound Snowman

Tactics

The snowman begins by using Mournful Stare against anyone approaching it, then pelts distant targets with Snowballs. It uses Icy Hug on the kindest-looking creature, especially one that tries to comfort it, and clings stubbornly to that victim while seeking more pity. It fights until destroyed, reforms at midnight if possible, and avoids open flames unless cornered.

DM Tips

  • Telegraph the danger with fresh child-sized footprints, a half-finished snow fort, and villagers warning that the snowman becomes aggressive whenever someone says, 'Poor thing.'
  • Play the snowman with a soft, quivering voice if it communicates through gestures or magically understood sounds; it should seem frightened and sincere rather than openly malicious.
  • Reward players who refuse to pity or comfort it but investigate its story; burying the scarf or reuniting it with Elian can end the encounter without combat.
  • For a stronger encounter, give it 13 hit points and let Pity Makes It Stronger grant 1d4 temporary hit points; for a weaker party, remove Refusal to Melt.

Loot

  • The Child's Red Scarf — A frayed wool scarf embroidered with the initials E.V. It remains cold even beside a fire and can lead characters to Elian or Bellwether.
  • Coal Button — One of the snowman's black buttons contains a tiny reflected image of the person it misses most. It is a useful sentimental focus for divination magic.
