Hush now. You are cold, and I have room for one more. โ scratched into the door of Saint Orra's Infirmary
Lore & Description
Appearance
This animated quilt hangs in a lopsided, vaguely human shape, its corners dragging like crooked feet. It is sewn from yellowed blankets marked with faded ward numbers, brown medicine stains, and patches of funeral-black wool. Beneath the overlapping layers, something shifts and swallows with wet, muffled gulps. Its seams glow with the dull orange warmth of a fevered body, and mismatched buttons, teeth, locks of hair, and tiny personal objects have been stitched into its surface like grotesque embroidery.
Behavior & Origins
Plaguequilts form when an entire ward dies beneath blankets saturated with fear, fever, and unspoken last wishes. They are not malicious in the way a murderer is malicious; they are hungry, confused things that believe every fallen creature must be tucked in and preserved. A plaguequilt prowling the abandoned Saint Orra's Infirmary has collected the keepsakes of twenty-three victims and now seeks the silver locket belonging to Sister Maelin, the nurse whose final memory gave it motion. It follows warm bodies, imitates familiar voices, and becomes agitated when anyone tries to remove its trophies.
Running Plaguequilt
Tactics
The plaguequilt begins by drifting toward the warmest creature and uses Cocooning Fold to restrain it, then bites the trapped victim on its next turn. It uses Scavenge the Fallen whenever a creature drops nearby, often ignoring a living threat to claim a keepsake. Fire causes it to recoil and flee if reduced below half its hit points, but it fights desperately if someone threatens its collection.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with a trail of mismatched buttons, teeth, and scraps of clothing leading toward a warm, abandoned room.
- Roleplay it with rustling fabric, muffled imitations of victims, and sudden affectionate gestures toward characters who resemble former patients.
- If the party is weak, reduce Cocooning Fold's escape DC to 10; for a stronger party, let the quilt stitch a collected keepsake into itself as a bonus action and regain 2 hit points.
- Let recovered keepsakes identify missing patients, expose a plague cover-up, or point toward the person who originally animated the ward.
Loot
- Stitched Keepsake Cluster — A fist-sized knot of buttons, teeth, ribbons, and tiny personal objects that can identify several former plague victims.
- Ward-Key Button — A brass button stamped with the seal of Saint Orra's Infirmary; it opens a locked records room beneath the abandoned ward.
