No harvest is wasted. No name is forgotten. โ scratched beneath the wheelbarrow's basin
Lore & Description
Appearance
This murderous wheelbarrow is built from black-stained oak, its single iron-rimmed wheel swollen with red sap instead of grease. Rusted nails form crude teeth along the inside of its basin, while two warped handles jut forward like grasping arms. A strip of waxed parchment is nailed to its side, covered in cramped names, crossed-out dates, and drawings of vegetables with faces. Its wooden boards pulse faintly whenever it smells blood or freshly turned soil.
Behavior & Origins
The wheelbarrow once belonged to Maud Vetch of Blackfurrow Orchard, who used it to haul pumpkins, turnips, and bodies of vermin from her fields. After a season of blight, Maud painted a hungry spirit into the grain with blood from the orchard's oldest scarecrow. The wheelbarrow began eating the harvest first, then livestock, then trespassers, recording every victim on its side. The party has appeared on its list because someone in the group accepted a pumpkin from Blackfurrow Orchard, stole one of Maud's seeds, or was mistaken for a thief named in faded ink. The wheelbarrow wants to deliver every name on its list to the orchard's abandoned pressing shed before the next full moon.
Running Listbound Wheelbarrow
Tactics
The wheelbarrow begins by naming the most heavily armored characters and then charges the nearest listed target with Rolling Ram. It uses its handles to pull isolated victims into range before unleashing Harvest the Listed, favoring targets near walls, ditches, or thorny hedges. When badly wounded, it attempts to finish a listed creature and consume it for healing; it fights to the death unless every name on its parchment has been erased or its iron wheel is broken.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with wheel tracks that end beside half-eaten pumpkins, a repeated clatter from empty fields, and fresh names appearing on the parchment without anyone touching it.
- Play the wheelbarrow as fussy and resentful: it mutters names, complains about being overloaded, and loudly corrects anyone who mispronounces a victim's name.
- For a weaker party, remove the resistance to nonmagical weapon damage and reduce Harvest the Listed to 3d10 damage; for a stronger party, give it four names on its list and let Harvest Hunger restore 15 hit points.
- A character who spends an action tearing away or burning the parchment can erase one listed name with a successful DC 15 Dexterity or Intelligence check, but the wheelbarrow immediately targets that character if it notices.
Loot
- The Waxed List — The parchment records the names of dozens of past victims and several future ones, including a local magistrate, a missing child, and possibly one of the characters. It can lead to Blackfurrow Orchard and Maud Vetch's pressing shed.
- Blackfurrow Seed — A single glossy seed rattles inside the wheel's hub. Planted in dead soil, it grows overnight into a pumpkin that whispers one true secret about the land where it was planted.
- Iron Wheel Hub — The wheel's cold iron hub bears a tiny maker's mark from a long-closed agricultural workshop. A smith can rework it into a weapon that deals an extra 1d4 damage to constructs once per turn.
