"No work until the grain is shared, the feathers are mended, and Elian comes home." โ painted on a barn door
Lore & Description
Appearance
A broad-shouldered scarecrow made from weather-bleached canvas, red farmhouse cloth, and bundles of golden straw bound with black cord. Its painted wooden face has a crooked smile and one faded blue button eye; the other socket is occupied by a living crow that blinks and pecks at intruders. Tiny brass badges reading "CROWS DESERVE REST" hang from its patched vest, while a rusted pitchfork serves as both weapon and staff. Crows cluster around its shoulders, hat, and dangling sleeves like a bustling workforce.
Behavior & Origins
The scarecrow was built by Elian Voss, a fieldhand who treated the crows as fellow workers rather than pests. When the landowner ordered the birds driven away, the scarecrow organized them into a formal association: no more guarding fields without grain, shelter, and one day off per week. Elian vanished during a storm, leaving only a blue scarf and a promise to return. The scarecrow now patrols the old Voss farm, negotiating with farmers, rescuing injured crows, and mistaking one party member for Elian. A concrete hook for the DM is the abandoned farmstead called Voss's Last Furrow, where the scarecrow wants the characters to help uncover whether Elian was killed, transformed, or imprisoned by the farm's former owner.
Running Crowwright of the Reaping Field
Tactics
The Crowwright begins by sending its crows into the air and using Organized Cawing to frighten enemies while it positions itself between the apparent Elian and danger. It uses Solidarity Rally to protect its allies and attacks the most threatening creature with its pitchfork, but it avoids harming Elian unless repeatedly attacked. When reduced below half its hit points, it begs Elian to remember the blue scarf and calls for a retreat toward Voss's Last Furrow; it fights to the death only if the crows or the farm are directly threatened.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with a chorus of coordinated caws, tiny union badges tied to crow legs, and warning signs demanding fair grain shares.
- Play the Crowwright as earnest, overdramatic, and deeply confused: it calls the resembling character by Elian's name, offers them a straw hat, and asks whether they remember the rainstorm.
- Use ordinary crows as roleplaying tools; they vote by cawing, deliver small objects, and loudly object when the scarecrow is mistreated.
- For a weaker party, remove the crows and Organized Cawing; for a stronger party, add two swarms of ravens and let Organized Cawing recharge on a 4-6.
Loot
- Elian's Blue Scarf — A weather-stained blue scarf tucked beneath the scarecrow's vest. It bears a farm insignia and may provide the only clue to Elian's fate.
- Crow Union Charter — A folded sheet of canvas listing demands for grain, winter shelter, medical care, and paid carrion-collection. The crows fiercely defend it.
- Brass Solidarity Badge — A hand-stamped badge that smells faintly of smoke and cornmeal. Once per day, its wearer can imitate a crow's alarm call well enough to attract nearby crows.
