"Please. I have been waiting all this time. Surely you can spare a little kindness." โ The Last Collector, moments before the shutters slam
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Last Collector is a sagging wooden toll booth mounted on four iron-bound wheels, its faded blue paint blistered by rain and sun. A crooked roof shelters a brass collection slot shaped like a frowning mouth, while strips of old receipts hang from the walls like pale, greasy moss. One shutter serves as an arm, slamming open and closed with splintering force, and a cracked sign above it reads: TOLL DUE, PLUS INTEREST. Within the dark booth, a single red lantern burns without fuel.
Behavior & Origins
The booth once stood on the King's Mercy Road, where a toll keeper named Orwin Vale was abandoned during a plague evacuation. He continued collecting from travelers long after the bridge collapsed, and eventually the road, the booth, and Orwin's resentment fused into one hungry construct. The Last Collector now haunts the overgrown approach to Nettlebridge, demanding payment from anyone who crosses the old road. It desperately wants to collect the final toll from Baroness Elira Voss, whose ancestors abolished the road's charter but never paid Orwin the wages they owed him.
Running The Last Collector
Tactics
The Last Collector opens with Toll Demand, trying to turn generous or sympathetic characters into debtors before closing on the nearest target with Multiattack. It positions itself so its booth blocks the road and uses Receipt of Regret against anyone who hesitates or attempts to flee. When bloodied, it feigns collapse and begs for help, hoping to trigger Pitied, Not Paid; it fights to the death while within its old toll territory but flees on its wheels if dragged far from the road.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with fresh receipts, coins arranged in neat piles, and pleas for help coming from inside an apparently ruined booth.
- Play its voice as soft, exhausted, and heartbreakingly polite; it should become cold and bureaucratic only after someone offers pity without payment.
- Let players discover that clearly stating a payment before approaching grants advantage against Toll Demand, rewarding caution and negotiation.
- For a weaker party, remove the psychic damage from Pitied, Not Paid; for a stronger party, increase the debtors' duration to 10 minutes and give the booth three Shutter Slam attacks with Multiattack.
Loot
- The Original Toll Ledger — A water-stained ledger listing every unpaid toll on King's Mercy Road, including Baroness Elira Voss's enormous ancestral debt. It can prove the existence of a forgotten road charter.
- Orwin's Red Lantern — A cracked brass lantern whose flame never goes out. When carried onto an abandoned road, it reveals old milestones and hidden bridges for 1 hour each night.
- Interest Token — A black iron token stamped with a collection slot. Anyone holding it hears a faint whisper naming the nearest creature that owes them a favor.
