"You were warned by the map. You simply mistook the warning for a mistake." โ The Misplotted, beside the vanished road
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Misplotted resembles a huge, folded sheet of vellum stretched over a roughly humanoid frame. Its edges are ragged like torn paper, its surface crowded with colored roads, elevation marks, rivers that flow uphill, and tiny settlements that vanish when watched. A brass compass forms its single glaring eye, while its limbs are ink-black lines that thicken into roads, bridges, and cliff faces as it attacks. Red handwriting crawls constantly across its torso, adding names to a list already swollen with crossed-out travelers.
Behavior & Origins
In 742 AR, the surveyor Odran Vale copied a mountain range incorrectly onto a royal map. The error was engraved, distributed, and discussed so often that the nonexistent valley of Veyr's Rest acquired a kind of existence. When explorers finally sought it, they found the valley waitingโand furious that reality had taken so long to arrive. The Misplotted now maintains a meticulous list of every visitor, trespasser, skeptic, and cartographer who has ever entered its borders. The party's names appeared on the list before they reached the valley, written in Odran Vale's original handwriting. The Misplotted wants the original map destroyed, believing that doing so will erase its enemies and perhaps itself.
Running The Misplotted
Tactics
The Misplotted begins motionless as part of the surroundings, then uses Redraw the Route to scatter the party and isolate whoever has the weakest Intelligence or Wisdom saving throw. It keeps melee combatants off balance with You Are Here and That Road Is Not There while using Fold the Map to attack from walls and ceilings. When bloodied, it tries to force the party toward a dangerous landmark or escape through a mapped passage, but it fights to the death if Odran Vale's original map is present.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the creature with roads that change direction, footprints ending at blank walls, and local maps showing the party's names in fresh red ink.
- Give the Misplotted a precise, offended voice; it corrects pronunciation, distances, and the party's descriptions of places even during combat.
- For a weaker party, remove its damage resistance and reduce Redraw the Route to 4d8 psychic damage; for a stronger party, let The List affect up to eight creatures and increase the area of Unreliable Geography to 40 feet.
- Let players exploit its obsession: presenting Odran Vale's original map or publicly acknowledging Veyr's Rest as a real place can grant advantage on one saving throw against The List or You Are Here.
Loot
- Odran Vale's Original Map — A brittle survey map whose impossible valley is drawn in faded blue ink. Destroying or correcting it may alter the Misplotted's existence and can reveal a hidden route to Veyr's Rest.
- Brass Surveyor's Compass — The compass eye of the Misplotted. It always points toward the nearest unmapped location and occasionally spins when reality has been altered.
- The Red List — A strip of living vellum covered in names. A name can be crossed out to erase one mundane written record of that creature, but doing so causes the Misplotted to know who used the list.
